Make this challenge a part of your regular family fun and you'll save money while having some great new experiences. Our entertainment budget is pretty much non existent. Paying for food, the mortgage and our heating oil seemed more important. We seldom do anything together as a family for entertainment if it costs money, unless there are really special circumstances. That said, we have still be able to have plenty of fun times, especially during the summer. Challenge the members of your family to create a fun activity for $15 or less. Each person in the family who is old enough to comprehend it all should be assigned a different day in rotation. Family fun days could be once a week or once a month, depending on your family. See who can outdo everyone who has gone before. Perhaps as a prize, the person who comes up with the most enjoyable time or most creative venture gets an extra $5 to plan the next event. Having a small budget, such as $15 (or make it $10 if you have a smaller family) can really bring out the creativity and resourcefulness. It is a good lesson for kids to learn. Not everything that is fun costs a lot. If you are stuck for ideas with your $15 budget, here are some for you to try. Use the $15 for gas and see how far you can go with it (and get back). Check out area museums and zoos for free or discount days. Host a family movie night and use the money for movies and snacks. Request a coupon for a buy one get one free bowling night. Search for local free music concerts and events. Buy 60 boxes of mac and cheese when they are on sale and deliver them when you volunteer at a food bank (thanks to my neighbor who inspired this idea). Use the money for picnic treats and have a picnic at the park. Get a spa day at a beauty college. What ideas can you come up with?
