Marriage and Money: Resenting Your Spouse

This morning, I was busy monitoring an overly full stock pot that represents at least another two family meals that will will get out of a chicken that we bought on sale. I was boiling the picked clean bones to make some chicken stock that will then be turned into chicken noodle soup. The soup, along with a small salad and some bread will make a very frugal meal for us. As I was doing this, my eldest son came in to tell me exactly how much the father of one of his school mates makes each week. Knowing the … Continue reading

Are You Raising an Entitled Child?

It’s no secret that kids today have more than ever before. The majority of the elementary school classrooms I walk into have children with much nicer phones than I have. They also have ipods and all sorts of other things we didn’t have as children. They have no concept of the value of a dollar because things simply get handed to them without any expectation. As a parent we want to provide our children with as much as we can, but we also want to teach them the value of hard work. If you feel that your child may be … Continue reading

Fighting the Cabin Fever

While it used to be that I could never sit still or stay in for long, these days I actually look forward to those winter snowed in days when everyone is pretty much stuck indoors. Far from the original cabin fever that I used to feel, forced to stay in with no way to g, actually helps things slow down and can even be fun. When the winter months roll around, I try to make sure that we are prepared with the basics. This not only means a couple of days of food, but also entertainment and projects. Sure the … Continue reading

Living Longer … But Living Well?

We live in a day and age of miracles. Because of advances in modern health care, we are now able to prevent disease and treat it effectively if it does take place. Senior citizens can expect to live longer than ever before, which is wonderful news. There will be more time to spend with grandchildren, working on hobbies, finishing up those projects that never quite got done. A hundred and fifty years ago, living to the age of seventy was considered quite amazing. Today, seventy-year-olds are out on the golf course or in the swimming pool, putting the younger men … Continue reading

My New Hobby Is Finding Freebies

One of my favorite frugal hobbies is collecting freebies. I just started this back up a few weeks ago and am glad I did. I’ve gotten everything from laundry soap and perfume to dog food and breakfast bars. This nice little hobby is good for many reasons. Being the frugal zealot that I am, it satisfies that itch to reduce costs and even get something for free. It’s also a way for me to take short breaks between job projects. And, since I’m a professional reviewer, I can help spread the word—or warning—about products. Many years ago getting free things … Continue reading

So, What is a Frugalista?

While discussing frugality with fellow frugal blogger, Mary Ann Romans, I learned a brand new word. “Frugalista”. Apparently my style of frugality has a name. As I previously mentioned, in my blog ‘A different type of frugal blogger’ , my goal in life is to get things my family (especially my husband) needs, and sometime wants for as little money as possible. So, what is a frugalista? The urban dictionary defines a frugalista as “A thrift shopper who will stop at nothing to get a bargain; including trampling store employees to death. The term is a combination of “frugal” and … Continue reading

Free and Cheap Prescription Drugs

The cost of prescription drugs has been skyrocketing. Many drug companies are raising the prices of these drugs in order to make up lost revenue due to the recession. But high drug costs are making taking medicine almost impossible for some people. Fortunately, there are a few ways to obtain the free prescription drugs that your doctor wants you to have. Pfizer announced a new program that will provide you with free prescriptions for up to a year, if you have been laid off and no longer have health insurance. There are more than 70 name brand drugs available for … Continue reading
