Over the Counter Eyeglasses, Frugal or Crazy

As a frugalista, there are many things I am willing to skimp on. There are still a few items that I feel a need to pay full price for. Eyeglasses is one area where I have always thought you could not be frugal… until today. I have been harassing my father for years about his habit of buying over the counter eyeglasses from the local CVS store. “Your eyes are nothing to play with”, I would tell him. You need a prescription. He always smiled and shrugged and said they worked just fine. As he didn’t have eye care insurance, … Continue reading

4 Ways to Save on Eye Glasses

Let’s face it; eyeglasses can be very expensive. Even with insurance, you are often left with a big bill. An eye doctor friend of mine once revealed that they make most of their profit on the sales of the eyeglasses. She said that there is usually a 400 percent or more mark up on eyeglass frames. Yea, that is a four with two zeros after it. Still, you have to have glasses, right? Well here are four ways that you can save some money on them. Split a deal with a friend Every once in a while, the chain eyeglass … Continue reading

Genealogy of a Lemon

It amuses me when fictional characters “talk” about their genealogy. McDonald’s has included a lemon in their current advertising campaign that wants to tell people all about his family tree. This is a lot more entertaining than the taxonomy, or “family tree” of an actual lemon. The McDonald’s commercial that includes the talking lemon is for their new McCafe Frozen Strawberry Lemonade drink. If you go to the McDonald’s website, in search of more information about the new drink, or to get a coupon for it, you cannot avoid coming across an animated lemon. The lemon, whose name is never … Continue reading

Invalid Reasons to Homeschool: A Rebuttal to a Public Educators Opinion

Our Education blogger here at families.com gave an assessment of what she feels are invalid reasons to homeschool. We all know the cliché of how the grass on the other side of the fence always looks greener. Well, in an educational setting, we often see our grass as greener than that on the other side. It takes a special pair of rose-colored glasses to educate children. So, while I agree with her in some aspects. Of course, as a homeschooler, I am looking at the grass from a different perspective. Fad/phase: I have written about this phenomenon before in The … Continue reading

The weather changed drastically here over the past week, and we even had to pull out the fall clothing. A Fall Down the Stairs And Healthcare Savings

Have you been putting off that trip to the doctor because you’ve been so busy with the holidays? I found out this week that if you can get those appointments in before the turning of the new year, you can save big money. There is no doubt health care costs are rising. I shudder every time we have to go to a doctor, and as a mom, I’m usually guilty of putting off my own health care. About two weeks ago, I started developing knee pain. Like anything else, I put it off. Until one day last week when I … Continue reading
