5 New Uses for Old CDs

My son just walked into a living room with an old music CD stuck on his thumb. "Look Mommy...a ring". "Cute, honey...now throw your ring in the garbage before you break it".

While I would never suggest that old CDs would make a pretty ring, it made me wonder what I could do with the piles of CDs I have shoved in my desk. They are everywhere because my husband recently bought me an Ipod at a discount store. While I hate to throw away perfectly good music CD's, I can't imagine that there is a big market for the music I enjoyed in my college years (like McHammer and Huey Lewis).

Do you have AOL trial CDs, music CDs and old software CDs piling up in your home too? Here are five clever uses I've found for them.

1). Make a funky fridge magnet. Simply cut a photo or image into a circle and glue it to the unprinted side of a CD. Place a magnet on the back for a unique magnetic photo frame.

2). Turn them into candle coasters. Used CDs make great candle coasters. They protect the surface from dripping wax and you can simply toss them with the candle when you've finished burning it.

3). Create an indoor snowman. Your kids will love creating a snowman out of used CDs. Glue them together, add a felt nose, a hat and glue one some old buttons. If you are feeling extra crafty, spray paint the CDs white and cover them with spray snow or cotton balls for a realistic "snowy" feel.

4). Make a treat for your feathered friends. Would you believe you can make bird treats out of old CDs? Simply coat them with bacon grease or peanut butter, add birdseed and hang them to a tree or deck by running string through the hole. "Wa-la" you have an instant bird feeder.

5). Create some modern looking coasters. This is simple. Just cut some felt in the same shape as the CD and glue it to the back. This is also a fun reminder of your favorite songs and "vintage" music collection.
