A New Wardrobe for Free
by Mary Ann Romans | More from this Blogger
If you took only an hour today, I bet you could find a whole new wardrobe right in your own home! Here are some tips on how to get a new set of outfits all for free.
When I read Andrea's blog about how the 80s are back, I got inspired. Not by the 80s clothes in particular, I've had enough neon pink belts and acid washed jeans to last me a lifetime, but by the thought that there is usually an entire new wardrobe waiting in everyone's closets and drawers, if only they would take the time to discover it.
To find your new wardrobe, you'll need to do a few things. Basically, you will rework what you already have. That includes repairs, combining things in new ways, salvaging pieces of things, and maybe even remaking items, depending on your skills and motivation.
The first thing that you need to do is to see what you have. Chances are that you are only wearing a small portion of your clothes and accessories now. What is available in the back of your closet, at the bottom of your drawers and maybe even in unopened boxes? Utilize it all.
I prefer taking one thing out at a time and analyzing it, just so I don't wind up with a big mess. But if you have a spare room that you can use to lay everything out and stage it all, then that might be a great way to be able to recombine things.
Create a box or a pile for repairs. If you love an item, but it is missing a button or has a snuck zipper, then just repairing it will give you a new piece.
For things you don't love, is there anything you can salvage? Maybe there are some interesting buttons or a belt that you can use elsewhere. Could your turn a scarf into a belt, a skirt into a scarf, a dress into a skirt?
Next look at new ways to combine items that you already have. Maybe you can update an outfit by placing a sweater with a shorter or longer skirt. Could you layer pieces for a new look?
Don't forget the accessories as well. Could you remove the straps from a small purse and turn it into a clutch bag? Could a single earring become a pin or a pendant? The possibilities await you.
