A Tale of Three Chickensby Mary Ann Romans | More from this Blogger 15 Oct 2008 01:20 PM
So, I stocked up a bit by buying three of the meatiest ones available. Now here comes the interesting part. Our upright freezer is currently unplugged, and I have been delaying plugging it back it. It needed a repair which required emptying the thing. It made sense then, with an empty freezer to clean it out and move it to a more permanent spot in our home. Believe it or not, our movers placed it in the garage more than a year ago, and we hadn't gotten around to moving it down to the basement. For those of you may not be aware (we weren't), the garage is the last place you should put a working freezer or refrigerator, as the fluctuating temperatures can shorten its life span and lead to costly repairs. Also, when you want to illustrate the point to a doubting spouse that the freezer isn't working properly, try serving some mushy freezer-burned ice cream that spouse one night. So, how was I going to deal with three whole chickens and no upright freezer? The freezer is all set now, but I still can't bring myself to plug it in for a measly three chickens. Being frugal, I figure I can delay it at least until whole turkeys go on sale next month. So instead of throwing the chickens into the freezer as I normally might do, I decided to cook them all up. Fortunately, my refrigerator was large enough to store them temporarily, once I tossed the science experiments in the back. Check back later for the rest of the story.
