Affording Health Care

Health care is a big topic of discussion right now. and now matter where you are on the subject of health care reform, the reality is that healthcare is very expensive. Here are some ways to reduce that cost. If you find yourself without insurance, if you can't afford insurance, or if you can't afford the bills with insurance, there are a few ways to help reduce the cost of going to the doctor.

First of all, your best bet is to try to find some form of medical insurance. Living without insurance is like playing Russian roulette. You are betting that nothing is going to happen. Even just a few minor trips to the emergency room for the flu or a broken bone can put your home in jeopardy in some cases.

Most states have a free insurance plan for kids with the only requirement being that your kids are currently uninsured. Check into this. For yourself, check into co-op group plans. If you choose a high deductible, you won't pay a lot per month, but you will be protected if something major happens.

Negotiate with your doctor for a flat fee. This is best done before you or your children are sick. Many offices will work with you. For example, you might be able to pay your doctor a few hundred dollars upfront for all office visits for the year. This may or may not include vaccinations or lab tests.

For prescriptions, take the Walmart list in to your doctor's office. Walmart offers many common medication prescriptions for only $4. You doctor may be able to pick a medication from that list. He or she may also be able to write you a three month supply, so you only pay your co-pay once in three months instead of three times in three months.
