After Hours Food Bargainsby Mary Ann Romans | More from this Blogger 14 Feb 2008 05:22 PM Did you know that you can save up to 100 percent on food just by being a little late? It is true. The old saying that the early bird catches the worm might not be true in all cases. Sometimes the late worm can get some great bargains. In the food business, especially with prepared foods, the shelf life as to when they can sell it is at the end of the day. Taking advantage of this fact can help feed your family for just pennies. There are so many opportunities to get a late night deal. Here are a few ideas. Check out the bakery section of your supermarket. Most stores that I have been in will sell their donuts and muffins for half price or more after five p.m. They want to empty the display cases before they clock out at the end of the day. Pizza can often be had for free just by arriving right before closing and asking for the leftovers. I know one large military family who stops by the pizza place once a week on Sunday evenings when the store closes early. They often get two or three pizza pieces plus lots of dinners, such as chicken parm, baked ziti, etc. The mom freezes all of the extras, and they always have plenty to eat. The owners of the pizza place are happy that the food can be put to good use. If you have a Walmart Superstore near you, check out the deli counter. They have a lot of hot meals for 50 percent off after 9 p.m. whole roasted chickens are an amazing deal. You can pull the chicken apart and use the meat for so many different meals. It is already cooked and costs less than if you bought a whole roaster and cooked it yourself. Especially if you make and then freeze chicken stock by using the carcass. I've also noticed people doing the fresh meat markdowns at night - you just have to use or freeze the meat within a day or two - which is very worth the cost savings to me!
