South Dakota’s Medicaid Program Has Limitations

The Medicaid program in South Dakota is administered by the South Dakota Department of Social Services’ Division of Economic Assistance. There are limitations to this program, including a need for approval before health care is provided. Medicaid is a public, or government run, form of health insurance. It is designed to help people who are low-income to be able to have an affordable form of health insurance coverage. Medicaid is funded in part by the federal government, and is also funded by the government of an individual state. In South Dakota, the Medicaid program is administered by the South Dakota … Continue reading

Walgreens and Express Scripts are Back Together

Earlier this year, Walgreens and Express Scripts had a dispute that resulted in a separation between the two companies. This left thousands of people scrambling to find another pharmacy because Walgreens wasn’t in their network anymore. How will the renewal of the relationship between these two companies affect you, and your health insurance coverage? Express Scripts is one of the biggest pharmacy benefit managers in the United States. Health insurance companies hire Express Scripts to negotiate prices for medications, and to oversee prescription drug programs. Walgreens, of course, is a popular pharmacy where plenty of people go to get their … Continue reading

How Much is My Co-Pay?

Some types of health insurance require a person to pay a co-pay at the time that they are seen by a doctor. Others will not. If your insurance plan wants you to pay a co-pay, then you need to find out how much that co-pay will be. Here is how to go about figuring out that important piece of information. Today, I had reason to use my brand new health insurance plan for the very first time. The receptionist at my doctor’s office noted that I had new health insurance. She asked me what my co-pay was. I had no … Continue reading

Why Can’t I Use My Credit Card?

When I applied for my new health insurance policy, I gave the insurer my credit card information. After being approved, I learned that the insurance company really doesn’t want me to pay premiums by credit card at all. They strongly prefer that I give them direct access to my checking account. Why can’t I just pay by credit card? It took a long time, and an incredible amount of effort, for me to find an affordable health insurance plan. I haven’t actually had reason to use it yet. My hope is that when I do need to see a doctor … Continue reading

How Insurers See Santa Claus

On Christmas Eve, there will be lots of children who are excitedly awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus. Kids tend to think of Santa as magical, and generous, and an all around nice person. Insurers, however, don’t see Santa in quite so positive a light. Instead, they see risk. Christmas Eve is, undoubtedly, Santa’s big night. This is the one night a year when he will carry a huge bag, stuffed with heavy presents, for hours at a time. He will walk on ice covered roofs, and slide down snug, (and dirt encrusted), chimneys. All of this is in an … Continue reading

Doctors Using Medical Treatments as Prizes on Facebook

Couples who are unable to conceive frequently turn to IVF. This procedure can be extremely expensive to pay for, especially if your health insurance doesn’t happen to cover it. Some doctors have started Facebook contests where the prize is free IVF treatment. This brings up many legal, and ethical questions. IVF stands for “in vitro fertilization”. This treatment can be used by couples who have not been able to conceive by natural means. Part of the treatment involves collecting the woman’s eggs, and the man’s sperm, and putting them together in a petrie dish. Conception occurs outside of the body. … Continue reading

Reflections on Money and Sress

It is often said that money does not buy happiness. While I agree in large part with this statement, I also disagree with it a little. It seems to me that some amount of money is makes it easier for a person to get through their days without experiencing the stress that comes along with worrying about whether all of the bills will get paid that month. There is a certain peace of mind that comes when a person is able to know that their basic necessities like housing, food, electricity, telephone, and heat are provided for. If there are … Continue reading

Thousands of Motorcycle Owners are About to Get Refunds

Thousands of motorcycle owners are about to get some money back from their insurance companies. Three different insurance companies who have been overcharging their customers have reached a settlement with the Massachusetts attorney general’s office. This is good news for consumers. Motorcycle insurance functions very similarly to a typical auto insurance policy. Auto insurance will cover cars, trucks, vans, and other types of vehicles that have four wheels, but it excludes coverage for motorcycles. Therefore, people who drive motorcycles are going to have to purchase motorcycle insurance. In some states, all motorcycle drivers are required to have this type of … Continue reading
