Wednesdays

Going grocery shopping is an inevitable necessity. Before having children, while working full time as an high school teacher, my husband and I would run to the grocery store when ever we needed something. Often times we would find ourselves going to the market three or four times a week. Not much changed after we had our first child. I was still working full time and planning daily meals was not something I did in detail often. It was also fairly easy to take the stroller into the grocery store using the bottom basket to hold the items we needed … Continue reading

We Need More Food Holidays

I’m not a very good cook, I only cook enough to keep us alive, but if I have something to celebrate, then I love to cook! I love cooking for a crowd on Thanksgiving or Christmas. I actually look forward to it, plan it out and dance around the kitchen, excited for everyone to come to dinner. The rest of the year, not so much, cooking is boring! In an effort to make every day a holiday and motivate myself to cook I decided to take advantage of some of the lesser known holidays. So dust off your apron and … Continue reading

Late Pregnancy Hemoglobin Levels and Diet Changes

At my last prenatal visit I had my blood drawn to check my hemoglobin levels for the third time. With my initial battery of blood tests my hemoglobin levels were good. As my pregnancy progressed, my levels dropped off and my midwife started me on an iron supplement along with adding more iron rich foods to my daily diet. The results of my most recent blood test showed that my hemoglobin levels were still lower than my midwife wanted to see them. Once again, my diet needs to undergo a change. In addition to adding a third iron supplement to … Continue reading

Adventures of a Beginning Couponer Part 1

Earlier this week, I watched Extreme Couponing for the first time. I knew that people were saving big using coupons, but I had no idea that they were walking away with carts and carts of merchandise for free, or even getting all of their items for free and then getting money back from the store. Of course there were things that I noticed about the show that helped me to understand that there are drawbacks to the whole coupon thing, such as the types of foods and items that a person can find coupons for and the time that extreme … Continue reading

Encouraging Your Child to Keep Going

We sign our children up for activities and sports because of the fun and the education. Often we allow the child to pick a sport or instrument to gage their interests. Some parents get discouraged when a child seems to have a lack of interest in any extra-curricular activities. The reason is simple. A child does not have the experience or knowledge to know what he may like. The same way we make them try different foods or know the right Christmas gift even when the child gave no direction is how we guide extra-curricular activities. Yes, you simply pick … Continue reading

Dreamers Academy Applications and King of the Elves

Today I have two very different news stories to share; the one is brief, but important, so I just matched it up with the other story I planned on running. For the first one: wdwinfo.com has the scoop that applications are now being accepted for the 2012 class of the Disney Dreamers Academy. A quick refresher into the Disney Dreamers Academy: it’s a joint venture by Disney World, actor/writer/comedian Steve Harvey, and Essence Magazine to promote youth education. Around 100 youth are chosen every year to visit Disney World for four days free of charge. While there they’ll of course … Continue reading

Panda Express Has a Coupon for a Free Drink

There are a lot of restaurants and fast food places that close kind of early. If you happen to be out late at night, and get hungry, your food options become quite limited. If this happens to you, then you should head to a Panda Express. Not only are they open late, but they have a coupon that can get you a free drink. Earlier this week, my husband and I went downtown and stayed out rather late, so we could go see a local band play a live show. I suppose you could call this a “date night”, although … Continue reading
