Best Buys for December

With December, the deals are all about the holidays. There are no surprises there. And, as soon as those doors open on december 26th, there is holiday merchandise on sale. You'll find the usual Christmas cards and ornaments, but there are some surprises, too.

One bit of advice: if you find something in an after-holiday sale, snap it up. Retailers have not stocked an excess of goods this year, so the pickings may be slim. We went out and practically had our hand on some Christmas lights. We turned to listen to a request from one of our children. When we turned back, the lights were gone!

Here are the items you should look for purchasing this month.

Let's start with the after-Christmas stuff. Don't pay more than 50 percent for wrapping paper, greeting cards, decorations, gift bags and ornaments for your tree. Stock up for next year. If you do a theme tree, it is a great time to splurge on what you need.

Big ticket items are still on sale, even after Christmas. They generally change whenever the Saturday or Sunday comes around. So score on HGTVs, appliances, etc. Whatever the hot items where for the holiday season will carry over into sales. For 2007 it is clothing and electronics.

Popular gift items are discounted for the entire month. Look for ties, perfume, jewelry, sweaters, electric razors and more.

Everyone is thinking of food and parties, so pick up your storage and serving pieces now. From entire boxed sets of flatware and sets of high-end crystal, to plastic trays and platters, you'll grab up the bargains in this area. Cookie cutters and cake mixes are also great deals.

Retailers are already set to usher in the next commercial holiday, Valentine's Day. They are sick of all of the Christmas and other winter holiday stuff, so go around the store and check for little bargains hidden away here and there. I found a bunch of craft items on deep discount, for example. the items were generic and could be used all year.

Happy Shopping!
