Rather than give you specific titles of books for frugal living, I thought that it might be more helpful to talk about which categories of books you should be looking at to help you live frugally, while many books that have frugal living as a subject or title can help save you money, there are also many other books that don't call themselves "frugal books" but can equally save you money. You might overlook these types of books when searching about frugal living. Gardening Growing your own food is frugal indeed, and where can you learn this art better than in a gardening book? Choose books that focus on vegetable and edible plants for your area. DIY If you can learn how to make your own repairs and home improvements, you will certainly save a lot of money. Plumbers charge $25 on average just to change a 25 cent washer! Learn all that you can about doing it yourself (including when to call a professional) and you can save thousands of dollars a year. Cookbooks Cooking from scratch will reduce your food bill. You can prepare a big meal for 4 for under $5 instead of buying a restaurant meal for $45. Pick up books on freezer cooking and crock pot cooking, too. If you really want to be sufficient, learn how to make your own expensive foods, such as yogurt, butter and bread. Historical Novels While you might not normally think of novels as instruction for frugal living, a well-researched novel set in a previous time can show you how people got by with less of the modern conveniences. I was inspired to make my own inexpensive laundry soap by a novel set in colonial times. Sometimes reading a good book set in a simpler time inspires me to simplify my life and enjoy the little daily pleasures that people use to be much less likely to take for granted. I also love talking to my 93 year old great grandmother. One day I was complaining about potty training and she was reminiscing about running her son out to the out house and hoping he'd make it so she wouldn't have to hand wash all his clothes. Suddenly my pull-up, inside toiled training seemed REALLY easy.
