Cheaper Beverages

When my husband was spending $21 a week on his containers of iced tea, we knew we had a problem. And while he was watering that tea down to make it stretch a bit, it was still more than $80 a month just for the tea. So we made some changes to save money. I’ll share what we did regarding the tea, as well as some other strategies for saving money on beverages. My husband had been buying prepared gallons of name brand “designer” tea. We did some hunting around and found that his preferred brand also makes tea bags. … Continue reading

More Stress-Free Savings

Not for nothing, but I just can’t see making my own laundry detergent for the rest of my life, regardless of how much money it could potentially save me. This is not to say that I look down on those who do. In fact, I admire individuals who possess the wherewithal to combine different ingredients and magically mix-up a concoction that actually gets clothes clean. What’s more, I am not above finding alternative ways to sanitize my home without breaking the bank. For example, rather than use Clorox to disinfect my kitchen sink and counters, I use vinegar, water and … Continue reading

Stress-Free Savings

There isn’t a soul out there who doesn’t relish saving cash. However, many people don’t take advantage of money-saving opportunities because they feel it takes up too much time or energy. For example, my dad refuses to cut coupons as he feels it is a waste of his precious time. What he doesn’t realize is that he could potentially save hundreds of dollars per month by simply sitting in his recliner and working a pair of scissors for a few minutes each week. If coupon cutting or rebate programs are not your cup of tea, then consider modifying your lifestyle … Continue reading

Should You Avoid High Fructose Corn Syrup?

Forty one pounds. That’s how much high fructose corn syrup Americans consume each year. High fructose corn syrup is used to replace sweeteners in sodas, breads, desserts and other processed foods. Why? American subsidies and tariffs have made corn products a cheaper option. This sweetener which can be found is almost everything you pick up in the grocery store has caused quite a stir. Experts cannot agree on the safety of HFCS which has caused confusion by consumers. Some people have decided to agree with the corn industries “sweet surprise” campaign and insist HFCS is safe. Others maintain it is … Continue reading

Bagging Lunch

You know, there is more than one way to wrap a sandwich. With back to school approaching, I have been trying to think of some new ideas for bagged lunches. My son prefers them anyway, and we can save quite a bit of money by bagging it ourselves instead of paying for it at school. One of my biggest obstacles is what to actually put the food in. My son has a plastic container that fits a sandwich, but he often forgets to take it our of his bag when he gets home from school. One trick that works for … Continue reading

The Complicated Fact of Bottle Laws

While some places are in the news for banning water bottles altogether, states her in the USA have been wrestling with a different kind of bottle law, one that doesn’t ban bottles but places a deposit fee on them. Yes, it is the old five or ten or more cents extra that you pay when you purchase a bottle or a can of beverage. When you return that bottle or can, you get your deposit back. I remember years ago as part of a group of kids who would hunt for bottles and turn them in at the local convenience … Continue reading

Have Your Cake and Eat it Too (Watch Out for Too Much Depravation)

I was chatting recently with a friend who is facing some changes in her budget. This person is NOT a single parent, but I was able to draw on my experiences as a single parent to offer her some suggestions. We single parents can be an amazingly frugal bunch—but too much depravation can be depressing and disheartening. I have learned over my many years as a single parent that there are ways to be both frugal and experience life to the fullest! My personal philosophies on financial management and raising a family on one parent’s income are really built around … Continue reading

Don’t Fall for Enviga

Nestle (a division of Coca-Cola) has produced a new drink called Enviga and claims that this energy drink can help us burn calories. Let’s see how it works… The caffeinated, carbonated drink comes in green tea, berry and peach flavors. It is sold in 12-ounce cans at a price of $1.29 to $1.49 per can. The claim is that it will help us to burn an extra 60-100 calories when we consume three cans a day. (That’s a cost of up to $4.47 for 100 calories burned.) Nestle isn’t making these claims without having done at least a little homework … Continue reading
