Fire Your Maid Service and Get Your Family Cleaning

Admittedly, I wouldn’t say no to maid service, if it was free that is. Since it isn’t I have to rely on myself and my family to do the cleaning. Getting three kids to clean is a chore in itself, even when just has to do with cleaning up after themselves. Still, I’d rather have train the family to clean than pay for a maid. Plus, this way, my kids get some valuable real-life lessons, thrown in. Routine is Everything Establish some cleaning routines, and cleaning won’t take up so much time. It is easier to do a quick wipe … Continue reading

Deep Cleaning Your Home

There is a big difference between cleaning and “deep” cleaning. While regular cleaning can cut down on how often you need to deep clean and make the work easier, it is still necessary every-so-often. Deep cleaning means getting into areas you don’t normally touch. It is those unseen, oftentimes overlooked areas of the home. How often you need to deep clean will depend not only on your maintenance of that area but what it is used for. Some rooms or areas of the home may need a deep cleaning every few weeks. But some can wait a few months. It … Continue reading

Why I Rarely Spend Money on Bathroom Products

Some people put in line items for bathroom products, cleaning products and then groceries. Usually, we lump all of these expenses together, since I most often buy groceries and cleaning products at the same time. I was thinking about bathroom products, though, all of those shampoos, soaps, body wash, etc., and curious about how much we spend. With the exception of some special toothpaste because of one child’s allergy, we really don’t spend much money on bathroom products. In fact, I can’t recall the last time that we did. So how do I get away with hardly spending anything on … Continue reading

Two Cost Free Ways to Get Your Home Ready to Sell

My real estate friends tell me that it is not impossible to sell a home in a short period of time, it just depends on the home. Still, with the housing market the way that it is, you don’t want to spend a lot of money getting your home ready for the market, but you don’t want it to sit out there forever being passed over for other houses that are also for sale. Use some smarts and a little elbow grease to make your home stand out among all the rest of the housing inventory, and do it for … Continue reading

Spring Cleaning the Kitchen – Part 4

It’s time to do some spring cleaning in the kitchen. Start off by removing as many items as you can, including those things you keep on your countertops. Take out the table, chairs, microwave and so on. The more you are able to remove from the room, the easier your cleaning will be. Dust the ceiling and corners of the walls. Spot wash walls, doorknobs, outside of cabinets, switch plates, vents, etc. If you are dealing with grease or grime—especially around your stove—you may need a special cleaner. Dust or use a slightly damp cloth to clean wall hangings. Dust … Continue reading

Cleaning in 30 Minutes or Less: Weekends

We are finally at the end of my blog series on cleaning in 30 minutes or less. What better way to wrap it up than talking about the weekend. I don’t know about you, but I like to keep my weekends as free as possible. That means I don’t want to spend hours cleaning. I would rather enjoy activities or just a day of relaxing. Despite working full-time during the week, because of my routine, I am still able to tackle important areas of my home and leave my weekends relatively free of chores. That is always my number one … Continue reading

More Mold To Clean Up

As if you didn’t have enough to worry about when keeping your house clean, now they say mold may live in your shower head. Did you just shiver? I did when I read that, one of those full body shivers, you mean I have been getting squeaky clean every day with moldy water? I know how important it is to keep your home mold free. Wet basements are a breeding ground for mold and once it gets started it’s really hard to get rid of. I inspect everything regularly to make sure there are no water leaks or damp areas. … Continue reading

Cleaning Bathroom Extras

There are so many things to keep clean in your home. Every room you walk into needs at the very least a dust and vacuum, but most likely something more is needed, at least occasionally. The bathroom is the biggest culprit of many different things to clean. When I think of cleaning the bathroom I’m thinking tub, sink, toilet, and wash the floor, the basics. There are so many other things in the bathroom that need to be cleaned. Let’s start with toothbrushes. Did you know that on the counter next to the sink is the worst place you can … Continue reading

Drain Cleaner is Off Limits

I just found another reason to use all natural products to keep my drains free and clear. Effective January 1st in Illinois it will be harder to buy drain cleaner. In Illinois if you want to buy drain cleaners or similar products you will need to show your state issued ID along with current address and phone number, your birth date and how much of the product you are purchasing. Apparently the chemicals in drain cleaners can be used in meth labs, not to mention they can cause pretty severe burns if they are used incorrectly. I don’t want to … Continue reading
