Closing Sales Aren't Always What They Seemby Andrea Hermitt | More from this Blogger 06 Feb 2010 07:14 PM I am in the market for new dining chairs. My old kitchen chairs were scratching the floor, so I moved my dining chairs into the kitchen and my teak kitchen chairs onto the deck. This left me looking for new dining chairs. In my travels today, I came across a discount furniture store that said it was having a closing sale, and I went inside. We saw some great items we wanted, and the sales person tried to get us to buy today because it is a closing sale, after all. In my typical frugal fashion, I was not in a hurry to buy anything today and wanted to get a sense of how long the closing sale was going to last. This way I could gauge if the prices would continue to drop and if so, how far. So I cornered a sales person and asked my usual questions. 1. How long will the sale last? The sales person answered that the sale would be on until late March. One would think that this means the store is closing in March, but wait. You still have to ask the next question. 2. Is the store really closing? "Well..." he said. The store was not actually closing per-se. Instead, it was closing in its current form and being reborn as a new store under new branding and a new concept. This meant that prices would very likely stay as they were, so I was in no hurry to buy anything right away. I still had time to look around. 3. Will there be a final clearance? You would think the answer would be no considering the fact that the store was just re-branding and changing names, but there would in fact be a final clearance of a few choice items that they wanted to discontinue. I will go back and take a look in a month or so. The moral of the story is, never let a clearance or closing sale allow you to purchase quicker than you intended. If your plan was to buy today, then by all means do it. Otherwise, take your time and shop around to ensure you get the best quality for the best price.
