Conquering Holiday Grocery Waste

Want to save almost $2,000 a year? Eliminate the bulk of your grocery waste. Here is how. In my earlier article, Conquering The Grocery Waste (1), I explained that most households waste 25 percent of their groceries. This waste is foodstuff that has gone bad or foodstuff that was purchased and then never used. In that first article, we talked about how produce is one of the biggest areas of waste and how we can make smarter choices to eliminate all of that money that ends up in the garbage can. Conquering The Grocery Waste (1)

Recent studies estimate that Americans waste approximately 25 percent of their groceries instead of consuming them. If you factor in an average cost of $7,000 a year on groceries (this is the number for a household of three, so it will vary according to your location and family size), you get a waste of $1750 a year. Do You Need “Green Bags?”

Have you seen those new “green bags?” So far, I’ve seen them only on commercials and info-mercials. They are plastic bags that are meant for keeping produce fresh. The ones in the bag appear fresh and crisp, while the ones that aren’t in the bag are slimy, soft or moldy. Hmm, I thought. That could be something. Until I looked at the time … Continue reading

Reducing the Refrigerator

In this day and age everything seems to be super sized. But, there are times when smaller is better. Here is how to replace that current refrigerator with a different system that will save you money. Refrigerators can really be energy hogs. If you are single, have a small family or don’t cook much, then a standard refrigerator is just a waste. My father is a good example. He lives alone and eats out most of the time, either at restaurants or in the homes of friends and family. Some times I try to convince him to take a bunch … Continue reading

Saving Money on Garbage

You can greatly reduce the amount you spend on disposing of your garbage with some simple ideas. In the town we live in, garbage pick up is not part of the normal municipal service, so we are left to pay for our own garbage pick up service. Of course, there is only one company that comes to our area, so we are pretty much at their mercy. I think they know this. Just the other day, we found an envelope in our mailbox that was pre-stamped to make it easier to leave them a nice big cash tip. The neighbors … Continue reading
