Do You Check Your Receipts

Cashiers hate it, but I do it right in front of them. I monitor everything they scan or ring up, then I step aside after paying and read over my receipts one more time. At least 50% of the time, especially when I have a large order, I find an error on my receipts. Nine times out of ten the error is in the store's favor.

While checking the receipts is imperative in a grocery store, it is even more important when you are in clothing stores and even buying single items. I can't tell you how many times a sale was not rung up correctly when I was just buying one item. Because I pre-calculate my purchases in my head, when I hear a price that I know does not sound right I challenge the cashier to recheck the purchase. Some get visibly aggravated or flustered, and I feel for them, but I am not about to pay more for an item than the listed or sale price.

Another reason a truly frugal person should check their receipt is that many grocery stores will give you the item for free or greatly reduced if you discover an error. This post at Michigan Consumer Blog explains how some states mandate a bounty be paid if a consumer is overcharged. Too bad such a bounty does not exist on large ticket items!

In addition to checking your receipts when shopping, you must also remember to check your account and credit card for overcharges. Keep your restaurant receipts and check them against what you are actually charged to make sure the waiter or waitress did not give themselves an extra tip, or worse. In cases where no one is really at fault, it is also common to be charged twice for a restaurant or meal delivery.

Supermarket shopping my husband and I do together. He unloads while I watch every price rung up. We always check receipts before leaving the store. Most of the people where we live are fine if queried on a price. Occasionally they have got snippy but it's ususally only if they know they are wrong. We should check receipts always as you said.

Forgot to add I try and do it nicely not in an accusing tone but still firmly

Oh YEAH! I'm a frequent checker too, but sometimes when my kid is really squirmy I skip it, and when I do, I always (and I mean always) find a mistake and end up having to make an additional trip back to the store. The checkers are never apologetic. Same with the fast-food people. My dad is a stalwart when it comes to checking fast-food receipts and the contents of his bag. For some reason in the 40-something years he has been ordering fast food the guys at McDonalds/Burger King/KFC/Dairy Queen/Jack in the Box/Wendys, etc. have NEVER gotten his order or change right!

You are all assuming everything is the cashier's fault. Trust me, it's not. These days everything is computerized. The company you shop at is cheating you. Unfortunately, they make it as hard on the cashier as they can, forcing them not to be able to take your word for mistakes, having to get price checks, and, once a price is changed they must get a supervisor's key to okay the change. At fast-food restaurants, they keys are already pre-recorded with prices. They literally push a button with the name of the item on it to enter a price. Wal-mart was notorious about deliberately pricing items higher in the computer than on the shelf.

Just because I said cashiers hate for you to check your receipts, probably because it causes grief, does not mean I think it is the cashiers fault.... sure they make mistakes, especially when they are tired, but the problems is usually more about pricing than anything else.

i agree as a checker in a grocery store, I don't see anything wrong with checking your receipt in front of the checker, we all make mistakes. Especially if you have a lot of items being rung up, sometimes theyre rung twice or no rung at all ... and to the comment above .. im apologetic and i admit my mistakes =)
