Thrift Store Treasures

If you are a single mother, chances are money is pretty tight around this time of year, well let’s face it, money is tight all year round! With the holidays right around the corner you may be feeling the financial pressure weighing on your shoulders. It’s hard to provide Christmas for your children when you are already struggling to make it on your own. However, there are lots of things that can make this time a little less stressful for a single mother. Yesterday afternoon Logan and I went to a local thrift store with some friends of ours. We … Continue reading

Thrift Stores Are Great

There isn’t one piece of furniture in my house, other than mattresses, that I bought new. It is all thrift store or yard sale finds or someone was kind enough to pass it down to me when they were through with it. I also love decorating and redecorating my home. This isn’t really part of the budget but if I find a great picture or a beautiful mirror and use paint and fabric to build a room around it, everything looks wonderful and I take care of the decorating bug. I know some people who will not shop in thrift … Continue reading

Thrift Store Gluttony

Are you a thrift store and garage sale glutton? I know that I am. The season of yard and garage sales is upon us, and with it comes the deep desire to buy, buy, buy. I’m not much of a purchaser of new items, and I love a good deal. This means that I can become seriously addicted to the pursuit of happiness through garage sale finds. This also means that I need to watch the clutter that enters my house. Like many others, sometimes I wonder where all of the stuff comes from. Stuff seems to breed in the … Continue reading

Thrift Store Finds Add Quirky Style to Your Home

Thrift stores can be amazing places, which is why I try to avoid them whenever possible. I almost always end up spending more money than I intended when I first walked in the door. Case in point: my daughter has been growing, so yesterday we visited a fantastic thrift store in a neighborhood we visit often. They have children’s clothes for a dollar. I walked out with $30 of goodies, including a wonderful new spring jacket for me. Yes, I needed the jacket, but I didn’t really need to spend the money! One of my greatest failings or pleasures in … Continue reading

Avoid the Pitfalls of Preschool Hand-Me-Downs and Thrift Store Finds

I adore thrift stores. So much so that when I opt to spend less on impulse buys, I have to swear up and down that I will stay out of thrift stores. It’s so tempting. A few dollars, a few more essential items…. That said, most of our toys are second hand. They’re either from Freecycle, from neighbors, from relatives who are all grown up, or from garage sales or thrift stores. I know so many people who feel great guilt about the number of toys that their children have. I don’t. While my daughter gets some new toys at … Continue reading

It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year for Thrift Store Bargains 2

As you wonder what to do with all of your leftovers, take advantage of other people’s leftovers, too…leftover stuff, that is. This is the best time of year to get wonderful merchandise for pennies on the dollar at your local thrift store. If you missed the first part of this topic posted earlier today, click here. You should also find a lot of toys, as parents, overwhelmed with all of the gifts, either donate brand new items in an effort to bring the gift giving under control, or donated older toys to make way for the new ones. I found … Continue reading

Dollar Store Shopping Strategies

Dollar stores are wonderful for saving money, but they can also be money pits, depending on how you shop. Maximize your savings on dollar store shopping when you employ some dollar store shopping strategies. Be diligent and selective when shopping for toys at a dollar store. There are some real treasures here, from classic army men, sports and play balls, puzzles, books, coloring books and more. But there are also plenty of cheap toys that won’t last past the first hour, or cost more here than elsewhere. Some toys to especially avoid if possible are: crayons (I used to advocate … Continue reading

Seasonal Sale Finds

I was out shopping seasonal sales. First, I ventured into the Half off Halloween sale at the supercenter. I had no intention of buying a ton of candy but I did buy a bag of Twix. A big bag. It was just so cheap! I also bought sacks of individually packaged Cheetos in Halloween packaging. The bags are smaller than the usual single serving bags, but they’re perfect for packing lunches. A pack has 30 bags and they were about $2.50 per pack on sale. That’s about eight cents per snack. I picked up mini granola bars too, 18 count … Continue reading

Lately I have been obsessed with decorating my home. Partly because we are putting it on the market, and partly because I know we will be getting a new home and I am excited to get moving on the design and decorations. Frugal Decorating with Flea Market Finds

After my two part series on Decorating at the Dollar Store, I thought it would be nice to add some great and frugal decorating tips I have obtained from objects I’ve purchased at the flea market as well. The flea market decorating tips are far better than the dollar store tips, because the flea market has a lot more stuff available that can be transformed. See what I’ve done below. Tissue Box Covers These can be found at flea markets, garage sales and discount chain stores for just a couple of dollars each, sometimes even less. I purchased three used … Continue reading
