But there are some ways to combat the problem. Not only can you effectively eliminate fleas and ticks for a fraction of the cost of specialized products, but you can also ensure they don't return by trying a few of these tips. - If you are looking to prevent flea infestation on your pet, which should definitely be a priority, purchase some brewer's yeast. You can get this at any grocery store typically in the baking supply aisle. Rub it into your pet's coat each time they are heading outside. - Want to both eliminate and prevent fleas and ticks? Add a cup of Vinegar to the bathwater when bathing your pet. - Purchase a spray bottle and fill with 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water. Mix well and spray your pet every day before you let them out. - Another terrific way to eliminate fleas is to grab a bottle of eucalyptus oil from any health food supply store, though some grocery stores carry it too. Using a Q-tip apply the oil to the dog or cat's collar area as well as the head. Adding some down the back and even the tail is a good idea too. This should protect them for most of the season, with possibly one more application necessary. - This next trick can help with fleas, ticks and other pesky insects. Grab some orange and lemon peels and boil them in some water. Allow to completely cool and after thoroughly bathing your pet, rinse them in this citrus solution. Not only does it smell extremely fresh, but it will cause the bugs to go running. - For ease in tick removal, you need to loosen it first. Apply a dab of mineral or vegetable oil directly on the tick. Allow to sit for a minute and then gently begin pulling the tick with a pair of tweezers. This typically works in allowing the entire tick to be removed rather than yanking and leaving a portion behind. - When giving your cat or dog a bath, always lather up a nice sized amount of fur around your pet's neck. This keeps the fleas from scurrying up to their head while you bathe the rest of their body.
