Christmas Morning Part II

While I was cooking and baking Christmas breakfast, our son was insistent that we help him find a pair of his “toy” drum sticks.  I insisted that he should check under the tree and see if Santa left a long and narrow gift.  I told him that if Santa was going to go through all the trouble of getting him a drum, that it would be pretty silly of Santa to not bring him some drum sticks too.  Our son searched under the tree but thought that every gift was long and narrow!  After I pointed him to the right … Continue reading

A Very Frugal Christmas Part II

While making wool gloves for my husband, I was inspired to make a pair of matching wool gloves for my son.  When the first miniature glove was complete, I tried it on my sleeping son only to discover that it is quite impossible to effectively put gloves on a sleeping toddler.  The next morning I had my son try on the glove and he did not like it.  I guess I should have made mittens for him instead, but with one day left until Christmas morning, I decided to save that task for next year (whereby I would have more … Continue reading

Organize the Clutter Before Christmas

Christmas and clutter seem to go together. There are the boxes of decorations that we take out of closets, basements, garages and attics. There are the extra toys and other presents we need to make room for in our homes. There are even extra food supplies that may overstuff our refrigerators and pantries. Because I get overwhelmed with clutter (although I’m not always very good at keeping it at bay), my first instinct is to run out to the store and fill the cart with all sorts of new organizers to wrestle the clutter away. Did you know that there … Continue reading

Making Christmas Simple

A simple Christmas can have wonderful meaning. Often, the less that we have, the more that we have to appreciate the wonder, the joy, and the glory of the season. This applies to both using up too much time and too much money. A couple of days ago, we picked up a few bags of bird seed from a discount store. That inexpensive purchase was one of the best ones we have had this season. It brought a number of colorful song birds right to our window. In the early morning hours, a hot cup of coffee and some time … Continue reading

Shipping Your Christmas Gifts for Free

I love shopping online for Christmas gift because it is so convenient. I can do my research, shop at different stores, find all of the deals and never have to deal with cranky kids and crowded stores. Well, at least if the kids get cranky, I can give them a snack and send them down to the playroom, something I can’t so when I shop at the actual retail stores. There is one thing that I don’t like about buying Christmas gifts online and that is the shipping costs that may be associated with them. Of course there are ways … Continue reading

Simple Teacher Gifts For Christmas

The carols are blaring and the decorations are out, and I am tempted to put my head under something minty-scented until January. Although I love the giving aspect of the Christmas season, its commercial bent gives me a strong desire to flee. But then there’s the problem of homemade. In this world of busy and this world of “but I don’t know HOW to make things,” how can you create homemade Christmas items for teachers, friends, and family and have them delight in what you have made? Over the next two weeks, I’ll explore some super simple ways to create … Continue reading

It’s Not About What You Don’t Have

..but what you do with what you do have. An outgrown girl’s dress can become a nice shirt. An old video game system can be repaired for hundreds of hours of fun. A romantic dinner can be had at home instead of at a pricey restaurant. By focusing on what you do with what you have, with your blessings, you’ll live a happy life, not to mention a frugal one. As I mentioned yesterday, I was turning over the kids clothing from summer (and spring) to Winter (and fall). I won’t kid you, it was a lot of work and … Continue reading

How Christmas Creep Can Cost You

If you haven’t seen Christmas decorations and other items in your local stores yet, then my guess is that you’re living outside of the United States, or maybe even the planet. As soon as the back to school items went away (the first week in September!) the Christmas stuff came out. Forget Halloween, those items started being displayed in August. While all of my friends are hunting for those Candy Corn Oreos that have already sold out, I’m avoiding the stores as much as possible, so I can ignore the Christmas creep. There are a few ways that thinking about … Continue reading

Six Critical Skills for Frugal and Eco-Friendly Kids

These are frugal times, and these are times when environmental consciousness is rising. How can you prepare your kids to live as adults when times are more frugal and much more ecologically conscious? This generation of parents has lost a lot of the skills that our grandparents had. I know I have, and I’m trying to regain them. Here are six ways that you can help your children become frugal adults. By modeling these skills and allowing your kids to help, you’ll give them great know-how for the future. Preparing Food Prepared food is something that is easy for kids … Continue reading

Save Money on Window Air Conditioners

The summer after we put all new windows in our home we found that our existing window air conditioners no longer fit. This meant that we had to get all new ones, and of course that came with an expense for the units. I did learn a few things along the way, though, that I can pass on to you to help you save money on your window air conditioners. Say Farewell to Freon Unless you plan on upgrading your air conditioning units to central air conditioning any time soon, avoid buying units that contain freon, even if those air … Continue reading
