And while the expense of it can add up when you have five people in your family, it is still nice to be able to go out to the movies once or twice. Because the cost of going to the movies could normally equal two or three new DVD movies (or eight or nine used DVD movies), I have learned how to save most of this cost in the following ways. Skip the snacks Do you really need to snack during the movie? Unless you are allowed to bring your own snacks into the theater, you can easily spend $20 or more on snacks alone. Eat before you leave for the theater. You can always stop for a small inexpensive treat afterwards (one local place serves $1 ice cream cones). Drive in theaters Drive in theaters are much less expensive than regular theaters if you have a larger family because you pay by the carload instead of by the person. Drive in theaters usually have the latest releases, so you won't miss out on that blockbuster hit. Go here to find a theater near you. http://www.driveintheater.com/ Matinee If you love the idea of the standard air conditioned theater (I remember when that was the only place to get air conditioning!) go ahead and head to the movies, but choose the time wisely to save money. Matinees or special evening hours may offer a discount. Going to a matinee would cost our family $25 instead of $37.50. Free summer programs Why not see a movie in the theater for free or for the low price of $1 a ticket? There are plenty of special summer movie programs that show family friendly movies. They are usually during the day on weekdays and show last year's hits, but hey, free is free. Movies in the park Another great place to watch movies is in your local community. There are many chances to watch movies in the park on a big screen that is brought in just for that purpose. Our local town even provides free fruit, popcorn and drinks.
