Forced to Pay for School Lunches

A new trend seems to be emerging. Some schools are now banning lunches made at home and are requiring kids to buy lunch at the school. The reasoning behind the decision is stated as a need for kids to eat healthier lunches, but is it just a ploy to get you to spend? First, let us tackle the financial aspect of it. I really don’t think that this is not, yes, not, a new revenue stream for most schools. School lunches are subsidized by the government, event the ones that parents pay for. School Cafeterias are Losing Money

It is a growing trend for more and more students to bring their lunch to school. More and more parents are packing up lunch boxes rather than paying the cafeteria for their children’s lunch. Some parents pack lunches due to picky eaters while others are simply being cost conscious. For whatever the reason, cafeterias are taking note. Cafeterias are noticing the trend. They say that they are being forced to give students more options and better food in order to try to increase the number of children who purchase lunch from them. Banning Chocolate Milk Doesn’t Improve Nutrition

Parents who had children in several schools in Oregon noticed what they viewed as a problem. The kids were much more likely to drink chocolate milk than they were to drink white milk. The parents believed that banning the chocolate milk would force the kids to start drinking more white milk. Instead, things did not work out as planned. They believed that removing the chocolate milk, and only offering white milk, … Continue reading

Waiver of Fees

In some previous articles it has been discussed that the public school system provides students with opportunities for free and reduced lunch. Through this program, children can eat breakfast or lunch in the school cafeteria for a reduced charge or for free of charge. There are certain income requirements that families must meet to sign up for this program. When a child is enrolled and accepted in the free and reduced lunch program, the family can also apply for other reduced or free opportunities. We typically call this a “waiver of fees”. These fees include supplies, school functions, and field … Continue reading

Teaching Socialization in a Structured Environment

Some of you may know that I have jury duty this week. You always meet interesting people on jury duty. Yesterday I met a women who warned me of the serious psychological damage I’m doing by not allowing my children to socialize in a structured environment. Generally when people ask the socialization question I prattle off a list of the kids’ activities. The socialization thing is ignorant people’s way of asking if the kids stay home all day. Do they have any friends? It’s a sign that they’re longing to get a glimpse into the homeschooler’s life. Most people thus … Continue reading
