The Internet is full of great of ideas for free and frugal board games. Some of these games can be played with only a few coins in your pocket. Others require the use of simple game boards and pieces that you already have around your home, such as chess or checkers. Still others can be downloaded in their entirety as pdf files and then printed.

So when the rainy days strike, or when you are just looking for something to do as a family that doesn't require spending money or television, consider trying a free board game. You can do an Internet search using the terms "Free board games." But, just to get you started, I'm going to give you a list with links of some of my favorite ones.

Fight!

Fight! is definitely one of the most frugal games, because all it requires is some change to play. It is a quick game that can be played almost anywhere, such as when you are waiting for food in a restaurant. It is simple to learn, yet it takes a bit of strategy to win. And, it also can help teach children about numbers and coins. To learn how to play, click here.

Peep War 2005

This is a war game with a lot of humor. The object is to lead your army of Peep marshmallows and jellybeans to victory. And yes, it is okay to eat any captured opponents. For supplies you will need, you guessed it, Peeps and jelly beans, along with a plastic egg (supply center) and a downloadable map. Don't have any candy lying around? Don't worry, you can print out paper versions called "understudies" to play the game. Peep War is offers sophisticated game play despite the subject matter. A player wins when he or she is either the last player in the game or controls 80 percent of the supply center. For a complete set of rules, plus "printables," click here.
