Our Frugal Birthday

Today our little guy turns one. In about 30 minutes, as I write this. I can’t believe that the time has gone by so quickly. I know it is a cliche, but it truly does feel like yesterday (or at least last week) since he was a little mewling newborn. We feel so blessed to have him. We discussed and debated over what to do for his birthday to celebrate. And we decided to have a quiet family celebration, to make it less overwhelming and more focused on him. Our older two children had elaborate birthday parties, so this is … Continue reading

Getting Baby Clothes for Free

Free is always a good thing, right? This is especially true when it comes to baby clothing. It is amazing how such as small person can cost so much money to clothe. From cure little matching outfits complete with hat and booties, to the basics, such as onsies and socks, the clothing cost can really add up. However, there are some ways to get your baby clothing completely for free with just a little effort. One of the most common sense ways of getting free baby clothes is to just ask. Ask friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc. Chances are they, or … Continue reading

Make Your Own Diaper Cake

Why spend $80 or more on a commercial diaper cake? Learn how to make one yourself and save money on a great baby gift. This is a great gift idea for a baby shower or for any new mom. A diaper cake is a fun gift that looks great and is actually useful. I love this gift because the parents can at first use it to decorate the nursery. Then they can take it apart and use the diapers and the gifts. Parents always need diapers! If you prefer, you can make the diaper cake out of cloth diapers, but … Continue reading

Let Them Make Cake ! (And Eat It Too)

Recently I wrote a blog about the extravagant birthday parties that some parents are throwing for their kids. If you’re like me you tend to lean more toward the frugal side. If so , then here’s an idea you should try for your child’s next birthday party. I was scanning the magazine rack at Books A Million on Saturday and ran across Cookie Magazine . In it there was an article about having your kids and their guests make the birthday cake. The making of the cake then becomes the actual party. The idea works best for kids over four … Continue reading

Lunch and a Movie and a Dinner, Too

On Saturday, we got to experience something my kids had been looking forward to for weeks: the second Despicable Me movie. My youngest choose it as his birthday outing. Normally, we let them choose between going out to eat or going to a movie. Nine times out of ten, they choose the movie. We had planned, as we usually do, to take in the movie at the local movie theater for the matinée showing, which is the least expensive way to do it. Instead, though a misunderstanding with some friends, we wound up driving 45 minutes away to a movie … Continue reading

Frugal Goodie Bags

Birthday parties for kids can be fun, although the cost of these parties can quickly add up. One of the costs that can quickly get out of hand are the goodie bags. Although some parents do get very elaborate with goodie bags (one family gave out $50 toy store gift cards and tickets to the circus), even filling the bags with traditional small toys and candy can can add up. This coming Saturday, we are having a birthday party for my two boys, and we want to offer goody bags to the guests at the end of the party. We … Continue reading

Spend More on Groceries to Save Money

A lot of us frugally-minded people can become obsessed with saving money, especially when it comes to buying groceries. Sometimes spending a little more money on groceries can actually save money. This came up a bit yesterday, when we went with some friends to a specialty shop in Lancaster, Pa. While we were shopping, I was obsessively checking prices and calculating unit prices on everything. My friend, who is a very good steward of her family’s money said that she doesn’t really check the prices, she just gets what they like or need. That is when the old mirror got … Continue reading

Make Your Own Nursing Pads

Are you a nursing mom? Why put up with those expensive and uncomfortable plastic disposable nursing pads? Cloth pads are nicer to use and more comfortable. They are also more expensive than the disposable pads. No fears! This is the frugal blog after all, and I can share a way to make your own comfy pads practically for free. Nursing pads are definitely a necessity, especially for the first six to nine months, before your body gets used to knowing how much milk to produce and when. The pads absorb any leaks that might occur between and during feedings. Making … Continue reading

Two Tips for Frugal Baby Sitting

Want to save money on baby sitting expenses? Read on for these tips that will let you have a night on the town without breaking the bank. I’m ashamed to admit it, but my husband and I don’t have a date night very often. With three young children, baby sitting expenses can turn a simple trip to the movies into a major expense. The average rate here is about $5-7 per child, per hour. So three hours away from home would cost us $45-63 before we even count in an actual activity like a movie or dinner. Sometimes a sitter … Continue reading
