Countdown to Summer Vacation

My first grader is so over first grade… and I’m right there with her, as is more than half the parents I hang with at the school pick-up/drop-off line. Today marked the second day in a row that my kid has exited her class at the end of the day in tears. Yesterday the class bully decided she hadn’t picked on my daughter in a while, so she got in some end of the school year jabs. Then, today, there was drama in gym regarding a “final” which was reformatted at the last minute. First of all, who gives a … Continue reading

Going to Trader Joes

I am a woman of product loyalties. This is something I share with my husband. We only own Mac computers, for example. We nearly broke our hearts when we decided to buy a minivan that wasn’t a Ford, and the debate is still on about the merits of Sony versus Panasonic VCRs (yes, even in the DVD and Blu-ray age). The loyalty extends to grocery stores as well. There is one chain store that I like to frequent, and when we moved, I was reassured that there was a location near our new home. I like knowing where the different aisles … Continue reading

Frugal Breakfast Recipe Choices

I’m sitting here, enjoying the daylight savings time and contemplating what to make my family for breakfast today. Making breakfast from scratch is a good way to save money. Cold cereal, while we do love it, can get pretty expensive. And we also have a tendency to overeat it, since it isn’t very filling. Pancakes are great, but sometimes we want something different. Of our frugal breakfast choices, here are items on the menu. These are breakfast foods that I have made so many time that I can probably make them in my sleep. Scrambled eggs and cheese Eggs are … Continue reading

Choosing Wisely for the Thanksgiving Meal

Some food costs more than others. Here is how to make the best selections for your budget and still be true to a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. On Thanksgiving, we tend to go a bit overboard. I know this because the number of leftovers seems to grow exponentially over the years. Everyone has their favorite dishes, and all of them need to be prepared. Why have pumpkin pie when you can have pumpkin pie, apple pie, cheesecake, cookies and a cherry cobbler. Well, I’ll tell you why. All of that food can add up, and expensive ingredients mean expensive dishes. This … Continue reading

Where to Get Free Food

If you are in a desperate situation with your food budget, there is hope. Here are some ideas that you can use to get free food. Barter your services for food. Rather than work for money, work for food. Someone who may be reluctant to hire you for money might be happy to feed you instead. Babysit, cut hair, mow a lawn, change someone’s oil, tutor a child, help with a resume, clean a house, mend some clothes, pick up someone from the airport, do laundry, etc., all in exchange for home cooked meals or groceries. I have a pantry … Continue reading

The Frugal Palate Phenomena

Developing a taste for home cooked food and a frugal lifestyle is a wonderful thing, and it is easier than you might think. The more we practice our frugal lifestyle, including home cooked meals, the more we develop our frugal palate. This is not only a pallet for the taste of food but also one for the taste of life. We have come to expect the things that are frugal and usually have no taste for those that that are not. Let me give you one example related to food. Back when my third child was an infant, my second … Continue reading
