Free Hazardous Waste

How can free hazardous waste be frugal? And why would anyone even want any? Read on to find out how you can profit from hazardous waste. No, this isn’t a joke. You may or may not know that many counties and towns have programs and collection sites for hazardous household materials. Some areas allow you to drop off your hazardous household materials once or twice a year. Other collection sites are always open. These are materials that need to be disposed of by their owners, but the items are not appropriate to be thrown into a landfill. These materials include … Continue reading

Free Gallon of Paint from Pittsburgh Paints

One weekend while Paul was away, I got the idea in my head that I wanted to change the bedroom. I was tired of white walls. He came home to a room with all four walls painted 49er red. I’d taken his 49er jacket down and had the paint matched. He loved it. It has remained red, even though I’m ready for a change. Paint is one of the most inexpensive ways to change up a room. What a difference it makes when a wall’s been freshly painted. Sometimes I do it even more cheaply. My kitchen is a lovely … Continue reading

Should You Buy Apple Products?

No, you have not accidentally stumbled upon an Electronics blog. This is still the Green Living blog. So, why am I talking about iPhones, iPads, and iPods? Because if you own an Apple product, you may be unintentionally supporting slavery. Last week, the New York Times ran an article about the abysmal working conditions of electronic manufacturing plants in China. While HP and Dell plants are included, the article focused mainly on Apple. Of course, any company expects its employees to be efficient and productive, but the Foxconn plants, from what I have read, employs modern slavery to please Apple’s … Continue reading

Facts to Consider on Earth Day

Happy Earth Day! Yes, today is the fortieth anniversary of Earth Day. I’ve written several blogs about this day, but thought one more was in order. Here are a few interesting facts to think about on Earth Day: An acre of tropical forest is lost each second. Americans are among the worst environmental culprits. Although we only make up 5% of the Earth’s population, we use 33% of the paper produced and put out 72% of all hazardous waste. Americans also use 25% of the world’s energy and every two minutes, we use one million gallons of oil. The Environmental … Continue reading

Banning Bottled Water

Bottled water is so convenient, isn’t it. In fact, many billions of dollars have been spent on advertising campaigns to show us how cool you are if you use bottled water. But the tide is changing. More and more people are speaking out against bottled water, and even banning it in some places. Why the change? Did you know that when a study was launched to find the best tasting water in America, the winner was did not come from a spring somewhere in main but the from the taps of New York City? I am not kidding. Growing up … Continue reading

A Guide to Greenhouse Gases

We often hear about greenhouse gases and usually associate them with levels of Carbon Dioxide. But did you know that there are other greenhouse gases involved with global warming? Here is a quick breakdown. CFC-12 CFC-12 is Dichlorodifluoromethane, a Chlorofluorocarbon that does not occur in nature and is entirely artificially produced. The more common name of this gas is Freon (Freon 12). Used extensively in refrigerators, air conditioners and other appliances as coolant, it was banned in 1995 because of its serious harm to the ozone layer. Older appliances may still contain this gas, so it is always important to … Continue reading

Longest Celebrity Marriages

People joke about celebrity marriages being between two members of a different species rather than two members of the human race. In other words, one actual year of marriage can be translated into 10 celebrity marriage years, as if these people were dogs or cats. Now granted, I am sure the pressure in a celebrity marriage must be astronomical. Everyone is focused on every little thing celebrities do, and I am sure things get misconstrued, leading to more problems. But every marriage has its weaknesses and its strengths, and celebrity, like anything else, might be able to pull two people … Continue reading

Annual Bulk Trash

Do you have an annual or bi-annual bulk trash day? It is a great way to take a good look at all of that large stuff that is gathered around your home, sitting there and doing nothing. Our town’s bulk trash pick up is coming up soon. Here they charge for bulk trash pick up, but that is probably because our garbage pick up is not included in our town taxes as it was in our old home. The fee is $15 for every three items. What can go into bulk trash? Rules vary by town or region, but basically … Continue reading

Saving Money on Garbage

You can greatly reduce the amount you spend on disposing of your garbage with some simple ideas. In the town we live in, garbage pick up is not part of the normal municipal service, so we are left to pay for our own garbage pick up service. Of course, there is only one company that comes to our area, so we are pretty much at their mercy. I think they know this. Just the other day, we found an envelope in our mailbox that was pre-stamped to make it easier to leave them a nice big cash tip. The neighbors … Continue reading
