Frugal Living Week in Review: October 29th Through November 4th

Is it getting chilly where you live? The weather is certainly getting brisk here, and the heat seems to always be on. I’ve been setting the thermostat to about 64, and bundling everyone up with sweaters. I think we are getting used to the cooler temperatures, because when my husband comes home and pushed the heat to 70, the rest of us complain that it is too hot. How have you been saving money this week? If you could use some ideas, then why not take a look at all of the articles we posted here in the past seven … Continue reading

Frugal Backpacks

Have you found that your child’s backpack is already torn or broken? This just happened to a neighbor of ours. Their brand new Incredible backpack that they bought back in August split a seam and now they need a new one. At the moment, they are holding the backpack together with some duct tape, but it is not a great solution. Not only does it look bad, but it has to be re-taped on a daily basis. If you find yourself in this situation, or you just want to get ahead of the back pack rush for next year, I … Continue reading

Frugal and Fun Chalk Activities

With the hot days of summer upon us, no more school books and backpacks, our children are spending more and more time outdoors. Since chalk seems to be a summer staple, at least it is around our house, I figured I’d provide you with some creative ideas to keep your children entertained with chalk. There are so many things you can do with chalk, besides just drawing pictures. Games and Sports Use chalk to play games. Draw game boards on the driveway for checkers, or hangman. Checker pieces can be made from light and dark rocks, or for a messier … Continue reading

5 Romantic Ideas for a Frugal Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I thought it would be a nice touch to add some romantic ideas for that special day. These are mostly ways to show your partner that you love them. However, keeping with my constant frugality, I have only included ten extremely inexpensive or cheap ideas. Idea #1 Fill the car trunk with helium filled with balloons. Tape a piece of poster board to the inside of the trunk lid that says “I love you” in huge letters. When you are at a park or trail to walk, hand your partner the keys and … Continue reading

Does Your Child Need a New Backpack Each Year?

Well, we have pretty much gotten all of our back to school shopping done for this upcoming school year, with the exception of one spiral sketch book, which seems to be an endangered species in my part of Pennsylvania. My oldest is entering sixth grade, which in my school district is middle school (junior high). With this transition comes another one I wasn’t ready for–lots and lots of supplies. This list pretty much takes up an entire page, and even with careful shopping, it cost quite a bit. One of the big items we purchased was a new backpack. Unlike … Continue reading

Blessings in a Backpack

I devour PEOPLE magazine every week and have for more years than I care to say. This week, the magazine had an interesting article about people trying to help out those who are hungry, mainly children. Stats show that about 16 million children are in what is called “food insecure’ homes. That is, there are times when these children are hungry and there is no food. Tama Clapper made a vow that no child in Gillette, Wyoming (pop. 30,000) would go hungry. She was inspired when told by a school principal that about 50 of the 430 children in the … Continue reading

Fun Financial Education for Kids

Allowance is a hot topic in my daughter’s second grade class. Last week, her school hosted a gigantic book fair and kids were given the opportunity to shop during recess. Of course, that meant administrators had to modify their “no money on school property” rule. For the fair’s three-day run, students were allowed to bring up to $40 in cash and keep it in their backpacks until it was time to shop. Naturally, my daughter begged to bring 40 bucks to school. “Do you have 40 dollars?” I asked. “No, but you can give me it,” she responded without hesitation. … Continue reading

Getting the Routines Back in Order

Somewhere between the middle of September and the end of October, the morning and evening routines started to get out of whack. The kids bedtime tended to drift further and further into the evening, and the chaos in the morning started to increase. From tired melt downs to kids who forgot their homework folders or lunch, it was time to get things back into a routine and do it right away. Our family tends to be more on the creative side and less on the structured side. A house full of free spirits with no sense of time will ruin … Continue reading

How to Make Budget-Friendly Lunches

My kids like to take their own lunches because they can spend the precious little time they have eating instead of waiting in line to get their food. I like making their lunches because it saves money, and I can control the levels of nutrition and the amount of food they get (for my skinny son, the school lunch still leaves him hungry). To make our school lunches the most budget friendly that they can be, incorporate some of these frugal strategies. Reuse your lunch bags Spending lots of money on baggies can defeat the savings of making your own … Continue reading
