Frugal Bath Fun

Want to surprise your kids at bath time with some fun? Try these frugal ideas that will still keep you afloat.

Nowadays there are so many options out there for bath toys. From the traditional plastic boats to colored crystals that turn the bath water blue, you can empty your wallet as fast as you can fill up the tub. Of course we have some frugal alternatives that are either free or cost only pennies.

In place of those fancy colored bath crystal, try a drop or two of food coloring. Blue is especially nice. Kids will love playing in a special bath, and they will emerge without any color on them.

Plastic cups can provide an entire bath's worth of fun. Kids love cups because they can be filled and emptied, pouring water over and over in the tub. Use your existing tumblers or sippy cups without their lids, or save the ones you get from restaurant meals.

Using shaving cream on tile walls, or the ledge of the tub or the in the bath tub itself. Kids can use it like finger paint. Or you can take the opportunity to teach letters and shapes. Just be careful about using this with young children who might want to taste the shaving cream.

Repurpose existing toys for the bath tub. We always did this with our kids. Anything that is plastic and free of stickers will work well. Some examples are army men, plastic trucks, play food or dishes, etc.

When all else fails, make up some paper boats. You can even do this with junk mail. Sure the paper won't last very long if you have an enthusiastic splasher, but the boats will be fun while they last. Just be sure to have a bag or bucket to catch the soggy boats once they sink.
