Frugal Easter Tips

Here comes Peter Cotton Tale...Hopping down the money trail. Just kidding, but Easter is a great time to save. You can indulge and celebrate this great glorious holiday and still stay within budget. Here is how.
Remember the meaning
Sure Easter egg hunts are fun, baskets filled with all sorts of goodies are exciting, and a large meal with family is often required. But, don't forget the real meaning of the holiday, that our Savior shred his blood for us and rose again. Fill the day with some real reflection on why you are celebrating, and having an excess of stuff won't be such a pit fall.
Egg decorating
I usually stock up on the egg kits after Easter, this way I can pull one out that I only spent a couple of dimes to purchase. If you don't have a stock of egg coloring kits, there are still plenty of ways to save. A little vinegar and ordinary food coloring works really well. For sophisticated eggs, die them shades of brown or green using tea. Or, if the traditional kit is a must, check out dollar stores, where the most you will spend is $1. I saw kits with famous character stickers in a dollar store just this past weekend.
Easter dinner
Take advantage of the store sales and online printable coupons (freecoupons.com is a good source) to get the lowest price on dinner staples. Choose your menu around what is in season or on sale. Here it is ham and strawberries, so both will be incorporated into our Easter meal. Matzoh is also cheap. In fact, I got five pounds free at the grocery store. It can make a great cracker topping for vegetable side dishes.
Sneaky eggs
I'm helping out the Easter bunny this year by hiding some plastic eggs. Thanks to visiting a bunch of free Easter egg hunts, we are stocked with plastic eggs (organizers at the events did not want them back). For prizes in the eggs, a few pennies, jellybeans and small toys work well. I have some leftover pinata-type toys left over from birthday parties that I put away for the occasion. Or save on the prizes and simply hide the eggs empty or with little notes and drawings in them.
