Frugal Fall Decorating (1)by Nicole Humphrey | More from this Blogger 18 Sep 2006 05:09 PM
Fall is my favorite season so I absolutely love decorating my home to reflect this. However, I choose not to go out and spend lots of money on decorations, I prfer to do it the frugal way. To begin, I suggest taking a nature walk. In fact, take the whole family on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, and go walking in the park, or even just through your neighborhood. I am lucky enough to have my mother's home on four acres of woods and trees, and so we have a lot to choose from. Bring bags along and have the children pick up things like freshly fallen leaves in unique colors, sticks and twigs, pine cones, acorns, rocks, empty wasp nests (be sure the little critters are NOT still living in there!), abandoned birds nests, and look for other natural objects you will find in the grass, or on the ground beneath trees. Next, time for a trip to the pumpkin patch. Find the mini pumpkins and gourds. Typically these are about 2/$1.00. Buy up several. You might even wish to stop at the local greenhouse and check prices on sunflowers and zinnias which are both pretty inexpensive and add a terrific autumn touch. If you are lucky enough to have a big field nearby your home, trudge through and cut some grasses. Allow a day or two for them to begin to dry out all the way, and place them in a pretty pitcher or vase with an autumn color ribbon tied around it. When you get home with your mini-pumpkins, you can empty it out just as you would if you were going to carve it. They make terrific potpourri holders and beautiful candle holders grouped together in the center of a table or next to the couch.
