Frugal Food: Rice

rice Rice can be a very frugal food. But before you think that this food is plain and boring, take a look at this article. I'll talk about how frugal rice really is, and how to spice it up a bit for family meals. Making rice a staple in your home can really save you money on your food budget, especially now.

Food prices are going through the roof, and analysts are concerned that we are heading in to a deep recession not a just shallow one. The price of food is expected to rise in leaps and bounds over the next five years at least. Wheat, flour and bread are foods that are especially high in price. Substituting rice as a carbohydrate for bread or pasta can be a very frugal idea.

Rice can be purchased in bulk very cheaply. In fact, according to the USDA market report, the price of rice is even lower than usual. The price on rice may change, as countries struggle to feed more hungry people, a result of a poor economy and increasing prices on other foods. But for now, rice is still very economical. Right now, you can expect to pay anywhere from $7 at Costco for plain white rice to $20 at a specialty store for organic brown rice. This is for a 25-pound bag.

Rice can really stretch out a standard meal. Besides being a very filling side dish, it can be added to casseroles, meat loaf and more.

There are so many different types of rice that are easily available. You can experiment with many of them to find your favorites.

We have three types of rice in our home at the moment that I use for meals. The main rice that I use comes from a 25-pound bag of gluten-free long-grain brown rice. It is a healthy staple for our family. The whole-bodied taste and texture gives a good bite, and it is delicious with just a little salt. I also use it in casseroles and stir fry dishes.

I finally got a steamer recently and rediscovered how good brown rice can me. However, my husband tends to make too much when he steams it and I usually have thrown out half of it because it gets dry and frankly, I get sick of it. Well, then I tried something. I added a little vinegar leftover from a jar of pickeled banana peppers, some olive oil, a little bit of feta cheese, and some pine nuts (I get them at Sams, so they aren't outrageously priced). Then I mixed in some grape leaves. I would have rolled them, but the container made it impossible to get them out in one piece. Anyhow, the resulting cold salad was absolutely out of this world!
