Blessings in a Backpack

I devour PEOPLE magazine every week and have for more years than I care to say. This week, the magazine had an interesting article about people trying to help out those who are hungry, mainly children. Stats show that about 16 million children are in what is called “food insecure’ homes. That is, there are times when these children are hungry and there is no food. Tama Clapper made a vow that no child in Gillette, Wyoming (pop. 30,000) would go hungry. She was inspired when told by a school principal that about 50 of the 430 children in the … Continue reading

How to Bless Others with Your Frugalness

You are frugal royalty. And as such, it could be your responsibility to bless others with your gift and your fabulousness. There are several ways to do this. Let’s make the world a better place. Okay, so I admit that was a little tongue in cheek. After all, how many people might consider it a blessing if you share your technique of washing out baggies? Still, there are many that actually could benefit from a frugal lifestyle or from the frugal fruits of your labor. If you are interested in giving back, here are some ways to do it. 1. … Continue reading

My Mini Zoo – New Pet Blogger Intro

As a new pet blogger here at Families.com I felt I should write an introduction post and share the story of my mini-zoo with everyone. I’ve had pets ever since I could remember. In fact, none of my homes have felt complete unless there was at least one four-legged furry critter running around. About ten years ago this love for all things feathered, furry or finned hit a high point. My second daughter worked at Petsmart at the time so she always had some tale of woe about a guinea pig, hamster, snake, fish, or other animal that had been … Continue reading

Residual Income with Suite101 – Being Frugal With Your Time

As a work at home mom, I’m always looking for new ways to bring in money. Being a blogger for the Single Parenting, Home Schooling, and Frugal Living categories here at Families.com is one way to make a little bit of cash while doing something I love. However, there are a lot of scams and just a lot of bad deals on the Internet. Over the past 7 years I wasted more time than I care to think about. I simply learn the lesson and move on. Then again, there are places online where people make a lot of money, … Continue reading

Eating Healthy On A Frugal Budget

Too many people tell me that the reason they eat such unhealthy meals is because healthy food is expensive. I tend to disagree with them, but converting these spendthrifts isn’t all that difficult when I tell them that our family of four eats pretty healthy and my food budget is half of the national average (according to my online research). I’m not a health nut by any means, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that junk food makes you feel terrible and it doesn’t cost less than healthier foods. Not to mention you’ll have fewer trips to … Continue reading

Home Schooling – A Blessing In Disguise

When people find out that my three youngest girls were all home schooled they look at me with shock and admiration. Then, they always ask why I decided to do it. My answers are probably similar to many other home schooling parents, even if we all have our unique reasons and ways of handling things. We do it because we believe in doing the best for our children. My personal reason for choosing to pull my two third graders out of public school, and never let my youngest step foot in a classroom, was simply because I felt I was … Continue reading

The Frugal Benefits of a Small House

If you are one of the lucky few these days to be blessed with a small house then congratulations. Yes, a small house is indeed a blessing. Here is why you are so much better off than families with huge McMansions. Your property values In general, smaller homes will retain more of their value in a bad market. This is because people are more likely to buy a smaller home when times are bad. So while $500,000 newer home may be selling for only $300,000 now, a $200,000 home is selling for $195,000. This is a true example from a … Continue reading

Frugal Living Can Be a Blessing

We all have different reasons for trying to save money and live a frugal life. But too often, we focus on the deprivations of living frugally, such as not being able to eat out often, or living without cell phones and cable television. But this is the wrong attitude. Frugal living is a blessing in many ways. It fosters appreciation Just the other day, my family and I were at a local park and everyone was having a great time. I felt completely blessed to have this great free resource nearby. In the past, before living frugally, I wouldn’t have … Continue reading

Frugal Organizational Articles

In honor of our annual fall cleaning and organizing at our home, I thought I’d provide a great set of articles to get you motivated and to think creatively on how to organize your own home. We are not like the traditional family where we do Spring Cleaning because with such a large family, we really have to do seasonal cleaning. This takes part four times a year, and the fall is upon us and that is when we re-evaluate our methods for organization and see what is working or not working for us. During the month of September I … Continue reading

New Blogger Introduction

Well, I guess the title isn’t exactly accurate. I’m not really a “new” blogger, but I am new to the Marriage Blog. I have been writing in the Home Blog, Kids’ Crafts, Frugal Living, and guest writing in Home Business. I will still be doing the first two full time, but I’ll only be guest writing occasionally in the others. I am excited about joining the Marriage Blog and as a bonus I get to work with Heather. She and I have both been blogging for Families.com since the Blogs first made their appearance. We were just talking about how … Continue reading
