hands Do you have dry, red, irritated skin? Before you reach for those expensive moisturizers, why not seek out some frugal solutions at home?

Winter has definitely arrived and skin everywhere is suffering the effects of indoor heating and low humidity. Whether your skin is just starting to get dry and flaky or it is raw and cracking, there are plenty of ways you can bring some moisture and healing back to your skin in a frugal ways.

The first and best relief and prevention for dry skin is water of course. Put as much water inside as you can, and your outside will benefit. I always grab a glass of water whenever I am in the kitchen, so you can imagine that I drink a lot! You can fill a large water bottle and carry it around your house with you or put it in a convenient spot.

Water can be put into the air to help with your dry skin. Use a humidifier for this purpose, or simply boil some water on the stove, letting it evaporate. Just be careful of curious children, of course, and don't leave the pot unattended. When I was a child, we had steam heat in our New York City apartment, and we never had dry skin in the winter.

For dry, chapped lips, there is a neat little trick that does a lot better than those waxy sticks that seem to dry out lips more than they moisturize them. For a frugal lip treatment, go into your kitchen and find a dab of shortening. It works wonders! If you are put off by the taste (hey, you aren't supposed to me licking your lips anyway), you can always flavor the shortening. How? By using a little bit of powdered instant jello. You only need a very tiny amount to add some flavor. You can mix it up in a little jar and keep it handy. I know one lady who is a big chocolate fan, and she uses a bit of powdered instant chocolate pudding mix. I'm not sure how it turns out, but she swears by it.

I always use shortening for our lips! Sometimes I melt it down and infuse it with fresh mint leaves, orange peels and even cloves...then I pour them (while straining them through cheese cloth) in little containers that I got at Wal-Mart. When it cools, it hardens back up and they smell devine! You could even try a little koolaid for flavor too, huh?

Ooh, the mint and orange sound wonderful. I wonder how the mint or orange would cobine with teh chocolate (pudding mix)
