The Right Way to Buy in Bulk

Buying your groceries in bulk can save you some serious money, not to mention extra trips to the store. If you aren’t careful, however, bulk purchases can actually wind up costing you more money that you will save. Know the right way to buy in bulk, so you get the best of both worlds: great pricing and convenience. 1. Watch out for the hidden perishables. You probably know enough not to buy 20 pounds of bananas, unless you own a bakery that produces banana bread, but are you still buying items that will go bad before you can use them? … Continue reading

Where the Early Bird Saves Money

In my home, we have two different camps. Those of us who are the early birds or morning people, and those of us who can party all night, well, at least stay up way past bedtime. Since I happen to be writing this at 4:30 in the morning, guess which camp I fall into. There is something to be said for early birds. Not only do we get the worm, but we also get the savings. That is because if you can get to things early, you can usually get the best prices in the following areas. The Movie Theater … Continue reading

Simple Ways to Spend Less

I still can’t get over the results of the TODAY show’s latest experiment featuring name brand versus generic dishwashing detergent. Who knew that a low-cost store brand could go head-to-head with a powerhouse like Cascade and come out on top? I buy Cascade. Religiously. Looks like I will be re-evaluating my brand loyalty. TODAY’s consumer correspondent Janice Lieberman gave great tips on ppurchasing generic items instead of name brands whenever possible. This is advice I’ve heard before, but typically I reserve my generic buys for common staples such as sugar, flour, and bleach. I don’t usually experiment with generic brands … Continue reading

Ways to Save: Savvy Shopping

I’ve seen TLC’s megahit, “Extreme Couponing” on many occasions, and each time I view it I’m left asking this question: Where are these people shopping that they can double or triple their coupons? Clearly, not in Wisconsin. I don’t know of any grocery store in the state that doubles coupons. And if I am wrong, I would love for you to let me know. I could actually save money if I’m incorrect. What a concept. I am an avid coupon-er, though I don’t dumpster dive nor do I steal newspapers from other people’s homes. Rather, I simply use what I … Continue reading

Grocery and Gas Station Discount Promotions

When the Tom Thumb supermarket moved in roughly 14 miles away, I wasn’t excited about the attached gas station. It was one of the more expensive stations in the area. The three cents per gallon discount I would get just for using my Tom Thumb rewards card wasn’t worth it. I could get cheaper gas on my way to somewhere else. I don’t remember when Tom Thumb decided to change its price structure, but the gas was more affordable. A three cent a gallon discount after shopping for groceries was a nice perk. I could save three cents a gallon … Continue reading

Purposefully Using the Little Things

As you may know, my husband and I are really buckling down to reduce our monthly expenses. It seems as though the prices for everything are going up, while our income remains the same. Recent unexpected expenses have drained our emergency fund and we are really trying to get out of debt. Although our home isn’t that large by many standards, there is still plenty of space for little things to collect. Many of these things don’t normally get used because they are forgotten or aren’t convenient. But purposefully using these little things will help us stretch the budget a … Continue reading
