Haggling Can Save You Big Bucksby Mary Ann Romans | More from this Blogger 03 Apr 2007 04:59 AM In the world of the frugal, there are hagglers and non hagglers. The hagglers see every opportunity to get a better price, whether it is buying a car or a loaf of bread. The non hagglers accept every price at face value. They can miss out on big savings that way. My husband is the quintessential non haggler. While he does look out for a bargain or a sale, he never thinks to ask for a better price on anything that is already marked. Me? Well I grew up in New York City where you can haggle for just about anything. I've learned that even at retail stores, you can often get a better price just by asking nicely. A recent example is from last week. Among the many things our new home needs is a new refrigerator. We went to a couple of large name brand stores and found what we wanted. We didn't, however, want the large ticket price. So, while my husband waited in the car with the kids, I went back into one store, where I asked the very nice sales associate for a discount. The manager was called in, and after talking a bit, he agreed to reduce the price by $200. Later, when my husband went back in to seal the deal, they reduced it again by another $30 and offered a rebate for free delivery. The haggling saved us $230 plus the tax on that extra money. Or, as I like to think of it, we earned $230 in just a few minutes. So haggling definitely pays off. The next time you have to make a purchase, consider haggling for it. You can haggle anywhere. After all, you are just asking. Many people shy away from haggling from major retail stores, but as you can see from my fridge purchase, it worked for us. As a guide, here are some of the best places and products to haggle:
