Hall of Frugal Fame: The $1,000 Brownie

brownie Okay, this has got to go under the "You've got to be kidding" files. If you had $1,000 to spare what would you spend it on...clothes, bills, braces or a brownie?

That is just what one Atlantic City, NJ restaurant hopes you will do with its newest desert offer. Just imagine, $1,000! I can't even wrap my head around that. With sales and coupons, we could probably buy enough brownie mix to supply 100 homeless shelters, easily. Let's see, at 50 cents a box that is 2,000 boxes of brownie mix.

Of course, this brownie could never be called a brownie; it is called a "desert experience," as in the owners of the restaurant are hoping to "experience" the good life by selling 1K brownies.

The $1,000 brownie is served at a restaurant called Brulee, and so far they have actually sold three. The brownie includes hazelnuts imported from Italy and is sprinkled with actual gold dust (yes, gold dust is edible). It comes with a vintage port wine served in Baccarat crystal atomizer that the customer can take home, a sort of high brow sippy cup. The idea is to take a bite of brownie and then spray a bit of the wine into your mouth.

It seems that the trend is catching on. Another restaurant near Brulee is planning on a $1,000 "desert experience" for Valentine's Day. This one will be a chocolate pound cake with a raspberry chambord "bellini." It also comes with a plate of black tapioca made to look like caviar. Plus, you also get real caviar, along with fresh fruit and chopped nuts. The side drink will be shots of vodka serves in Faberge eggs, another "toy with the meal" take home that the customer can keep.

What do you think? If you were given a $1,000 brownie, what would you do with it?

Hey--I just wrote an article on this in food! It's posting for Valentine's Day though! As for me I have much better things to do with $1,000 dollars.
