Hosting Santa's Workshop

Each year, it seems that we wind up spending too much money on the holidays. One of the ways to cut this expense down while reinforcing the validity of Christmas is to concentrate on gifts that come from the heart, gifts that are made by hand. But coming up with something that doesn't look homemade can be a bit of a challenge. Why not get organized with a Santa's workshop that will not only yield great gifts but also create a warm social engagement during the holidays.

Setting up the workshop

Making gifts is really fun when you do it together. You might want to gather some of your craft friends and set a couple of dates aside to come together for your workshop. Pick easy projects that will also create lovely gifts. Use each other talents and experiences. Some ideas might be painting votive candle holders, knitting or crocheting, scrapbooking, making soap, making jewelry, creating gifts in a jar, etc. You can check out craft books from the library for inspiration.

Once you have your projects in mind, then gather your materials. Make sure that you have enough for everyone who will be doing the project, as well as a couple of extra supplies in case something breaks or gets lost.

Plan out some easy snacks, or decide that you will take a break for lunch.

For kids, the workshop can be even easier. Forget the organized craft that starts from beginning to end. Instead, supply the kids with an assortment of materials and then let them create their own gifts from their imaginations. Using recycled materials is a plus, but also supply markers, pencils, crayons, glue, scissors, tape, construction paper, beads and anything else that you might feel is inspiring to the younger set. You might be suprised when they come up with their own board games, vehicles, books, etc.
