How to Save Money on Carpet

In retrospect, I think we spent far too much on carpet for our family room. In our defense, this was the first time that we ever actually purchased carpet. We did do some research and got a few discounts, but we probably could have done more. Here are some of the things I've learned since then. Hopefully, you can use these tips to save money on your own carpet.

Know when to buy

It pays to know what time of the year is best for buying your carpet. The time period of December to January is probably the time that you will get the very best deal. This is because carpet sales can slow to a crawl at this time. No one wants to move the Christmas tree or interrupt family holiday festivities to install carpet. The next best time is in the summer.

Negotiate

If you are shopping for carpet at the slow period, you'll have extra room for negotiation. Make it clear that you are prepared to wait for carpet or shop elsewhere. Besides prices, there are several other areas in which negotiation can come in handy. Have them upgrade the carpet padding for free, include or reduce the installation charges, remove any furniture moving charges, add in stain guard or bind the left over remnants as rugs for you.

Carpet rebates

Carpet rebates can come in two main forms: a rebate from the manufacturer and a rebate from the store. Sometimes you can combine these two rebates to get the most percentage off! Call ahead to the store and ask when their might be carpet rebates available. Call every week if you have to until the rebates come up. This is a sure way to save big dollars on your carpet! Who knows, you might even save enough to pay for an entire extra room of carpet.
