How to Stock up at Yard Sales

Yard sales are great opportunities to find the things you need. You can go one step further and stock up on things that you will need in the near future. Here is a basic guide on what to look for at yard sales for your stockpile.

Small appliances

If you spot small appliances that are new or like new in a yard sale then consider purchasing a spare for something that you already have but use frequently. For example, I tend to use up an iron about every two years. I use it that often. I'd rather pay $2 or $3 for a new iron in a box than $30 or $40, so I make sure that I always have one spare on hand.

It is amazing how many new appliances there are available at yard sales. Coffee makers, crock pots, bread machines, hair dryers and toaster ovens top the list.

Outdoor clothing

Kids lose hats, gloves, mittens, scarves and other winter gear. It is just a fact of life. And if they don't lose them, then they will outgrow them quickly. So if you spot some good deals on these at yard sales, stock up. I'll even stock up on extra winter coats if I can get them cheaply. This way I have spares if they get soaked by snow or rain to to lend out when the kids friends arrive at our house unprepared and later have to go home in the cold.

Grocery items

Often I can find grocery items at a yard sale. These might include unopened health and beauty items, such as toothpaste and shampoo, or unopened boxes of food. Check expiration dates and packaging carefully. You should also have an idea of how much these items cost in the store or on sale.
