Back to School on a Budget

The summer is coming to a close which means if your little ones haven’t already started back to school they will be soon. This is an exciting time as your children are starting on their new school adventures, but it can also be a very stressful time as it adds some pretty significant expenses on to an already tight budget. Stores everywhere are advertising their notorious back to school sales and it’s time to start collecting those ads! I am a bargain shopper. I’m all about getting the most bang for your buck. As a single mom, money is always … Continue reading

Do You Do “Stocking Stuffers?”

Every year, I have a little debate with myself about stocking stuffers. Do we continue to do stocking stuffers? Do we just have stockings for the kids or include the parents as well? Do I have to buy myself stocking stuffers, since, well, I’m the stocking stuffer lady and if I don’t do it no one else will. I learned this last one during one Christmas when the kids wanted to know why there was nothing in my stocking. Whoops. Then I always wonder what to put in the stockings. How much money do you spend on an individual stocking … Continue reading

Keeping Order of School Supplies in Your Home

In some parts of the country, school has already started. Here in Wisconsin the official first day of school for most districts is September 1st. One of the things that are on the mind of parents is school supplies. Not just the supplies children need at school but the stuff they need at home. Many items they need duplicates of (pencils, paper, calculator, markers, crayons, etc.) and some items you need to keep stocked so that your children can pull from them throughout the school year (notebooks, pocket folders, etc.). Where does all of this fit into housekeeping? Well, without … Continue reading

School Store Helps Kids Learn Important Life Skills

A school in Arizona is doing something really interesting in order to help students who are in the special needs program to learn much needed skills. They have created a school store where other students can purchase inexpensive and interesting school supplies. This is a great opportunity for kids to practice socials skills and to learn life skills. Kids who have certain kinds of special needs, (such as ADHD, or an autism spectrum disorder), struggle with social skills. Many special needs programs will include lessons on the proper way to respond to certain social situations, as well as a way … Continue reading

Back-to-School Supply Surprises

I could so relate to the recent New York Times piece on back-to-school lists. My daughter’s is nearly a mile long and includes items that left me wondering if I was stocking the school’s janitorial supply room instead of prepping my child for first grade. Tuition at my daughter’s Catholic school is insanely high (one academic year = price of a very, very good used car), so why is it that I am having to send my kid to school with cleaning supplies, Ziploc bags, anti-bacterial products and a myriad of paper goods, in addition to the standard pencils, notebooks … Continue reading

School Supplies are Tax Free From Kohl’s in Illinois

It’s that time of year again! School will be starting soon, and your children are going to need new school supplies, new clothes for school, and new shoes for gym class. If you live in Illinois, you can get these items tax free from Kohl’s this week. I signed up to be on the email list for Kohl’s when I first got their store credit card. Since then, I have received information about all of the upcoming and current sales. This makes it really easy for me to learn what is on sale, without ever having to leave my house. … Continue reading

I’m Stocking Up on School Supplies

Can you believe that it is already time to start stocking up on school supplies? As soon as that calendar hit August 1st, the sales have started. Are you taking advantage of them? Do you have some good ideas for all of those cheap or free supplies? I do! We have a number of things coming up in August and September, so I really wanted to get all of the back to school stuff out of the way as early as possible. My son already has a backpack from previous years, and we purchased one for my daughter, a soon-to-be … Continue reading

Five Cheap Art Materials You Never Expected To Use With Your Preschooler

My daughter is our resident craft expert. She is currently focused on creating conceptual sculptures. At the moment, her sculptures seem to revolve around the use of drinking straws and painter’s tape. I am not entirely sure what these sculptures mean, but I’m sure that it’s something far beyond my adult understanding. Now, it’s not like she doesn’t have a whole box of art supplies to choose from. In fact, she has several large boxes of art supplies. Preschoolers love to use unorthodox materials for their art, and it’s always interesting to see what my daughter chooses to create and … Continue reading

Unexpected School: A Student’s Worst Nightmare

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that Wal-Mart has already started stocking its back-to-school supplies. So long beach towels and sun chairs. The area, where just last week, I picked up a mini cooler for my daughter’s summer soccer camp is now filled with pencils, pens, paper and shiny new scissors. The new arrangement was met by more than just a few sighs from the parent-shoppers I passed. If Wal-Mart’s back-to-school displays are disconcerting for them, imagine how it must feel for students and parents in Southern California. Thanks to a clerical error, kids at Dickson Elementary in Chino and … Continue reading
