Out With the Old: Decluttering Your Home

Welcome to 2010! It’s a new year filled with new intentions. Unfortunately, it’s also filled with lots of old stuff. Here are some tips to start off the New Year with less stuff by decluttering your home. Tackle the task room by room. If you empty all of the drawers in the bedroom, then move into the living room and do the same, you will be left with a mess after a few hours, and you’ll be too exhausted to sort anymore. If necessary, go cupboard by cupboard. You don’t need to do everything in one day. Have several bags. … Continue reading

Clearing Clutter and Making A Few Bucks

I have been gathering stuff to have a yard sale. The problem is, it’s not quite enough stuff to make it worth the effort. The pile in my garage is growing, I need to do something about it. I also need to re carpet the living room because the dog has used it as her potty. I planned on having the yard sale to pay for the carpet. Instead, I decided to post all the stuff online through a local news station. This really is a convenient way to get rid of things that are cluttering up your house. I … Continue reading

Productive Sunday

I pride myself on being organized. I am not a hoarder, I don’t keep things that aren’t useful or beautiful. So how did I end up with a family room packed full of stuff to have a yard sale with? I woke up super motivated this morning. By ten a.m. I had cleaned the upstairs of my house, mowed the front yard and shaved the dog. I was on a roll. As I was cleaning I was collecting things that I no longer need. Just a few things, or so I thought. I found some clothes that I no longer … Continue reading

Parents Are Wasters

According to the National Retail Federation, parents are a bunch of wasters. The group maintains that the average American family wastes nearly 15% of its purchases, from food to household supplies, gifts to apparel. Guilty as charged. I just trashed a half-empty container of hummus because it expired before my family could finish it. I despise wasting food, and would have downed the remaining chickpea spread myself had it not smelled like sweaty feet. I’ve eaten expired food items in the past, but didn’t want to chance it with the hummus, since the container was compromised. Apparently, it had slid … Continue reading

Renting VS Buying

I am sure the title made you think about renting a home versus home ownership. When being frugal however there are alot more things that you need to ponder over when it comes to renting or buying. It amazes me the things people will rent and the prices they will pay for the rental when they could in fact, own the item. Here is a list of items that you should seriously consider purchasing if you are in the habit of renting. Tuxedo: To rent a nice tuxedo can cost $75.00. A really nice tuxedo can be upwards of $200. … Continue reading

When to get furniture from the furniture rental store

(cc) image from flickr As the economy went south, sales at Aarons, went north. The 15% increase in sales can be attributed directly to this being a business that caters to the working poor. As the economy got worse, the customer base at Aarons grew. Aarons, Rent-a-center, Color Tyme and similar rent-to-own companies rent furniture to people who don’t have the money or credit to purchase it outright. The way it works is that they rent a $1000.00 TV for $100.00 a month for a term of 24 months. Along with monthly processing fees, profit on this TV is more … Continue reading

Auction Sites Might Not Be a Frugal Choice

Online auction sites have become the latest rage over the past few years. I can remember when I first laid eyes on some of the top ones, and that was a long time ago. They are growing and leaps and bounds with thousands of visitors everyday bidding on all types of things. The problem with auction sites is that they are not always a frugal source. Many people think that listing their extra items to get rid of them and making a little extra cash in the long run seems pretty frugal. And it does at first glance. However, you … Continue reading
