Meatless Monday Campaign Continues

Not too long ago, I blogged about Meatless Monday. That is the campaign to avoid meat on Mondays. This campaign has two benefits – it is green and it is healthy. Sid Lerner, who gave us the “Squeeze the Charmin” campaign, is now trying to get chefs on board for his Meatless Mondays. He hopes to turn something that may seem routine into something special. Who’s trying to help Lerner spread the word? One of my favorite celebrity chefs, Wolfgang Puck, has used the concept in some of his restaurants. He started Meatless Monday at his Las Vegas eatery, Wolfgang … Continue reading

Just Another Meatless Monday

When I read this story, the Bangles “Just Another Manic Monday” ran through my mind. But, the Monday I am going to write about today isn’t manic, but meatless. That’s right – meatless. I’ve preached meatlessness (a word I apparently just made up) before as a way to be green and healthy at the same time. And now, we have an actually campaign called Meatless Mondays. Meatless Mondays was created by Sid Lerner and Lerner knows a thing or two about advertising. He had a 50 year advertising career in New York City, including the now famous “Squeeze the Charmin” … Continue reading

Just Another Meatless Monday

A while back, I explained what Meatless Mondays are around our house. Basically, we set aside one night a week to eat a vegetarian meal. This helps us eat healthier, and we save a little money too. Monday nights have gotten to be quite fun, and I have especially enjoyed trying new meatless recipes. This last Monday I branched out from my tried-and-true Italian or Mexican dishes to make a meatless chili. The idea was sent to me by a reader in response to my original Meatless Monday article. Now, I know that it makes sense to most people that … Continue reading

Warming Hurts Ski Industry

What is it going to take for businesses to realize global warming is real?  What about a loss in profits? Americans love to ski and play in the snow.  And, it’s big business, bringing in an estimated $1.4 billion in state and local taxes and $1.7 billion in federal taxes alone.  But, lack of snow fall, perhaps due to global warming, has slowed the industry. A report done by two University of New Hampshire researchers for Protect Our Winters and the Natural Resources Defense Council shows that global warming is hurting ski resorts.  The study estimates the ski industry has … Continue reading

Green Easter

It’s almost Easter and as always, when holidays are near, my mind turns to celebrating them in a green way. First, you can make your own Easter basket, but you may not be that crafty. I would love to be able to make a cute cloth basket, but I cannot sew, so I just have to settle for purchasing one at the store. You can get a simple basket then allows the kids to decorate it with eco-friendly items such as fresh flowers, bows made from scraps of fabric, and felt eggs and bunnies. If you want to be really … Continue reading

Importance of a Safety Net

If you are a tight rope walker you know how important a safety net is, but everyone needs a safety net, not just circus performers. I’ve read time and again that everyone should have $500 in an emergency account. In the grand scheme of things $500 isn’t a lot of money, but when you are living paycheck to paycheck the amount may seem unreachable. I’ve learned lately how important that $500 is and how much it’s saved me in the long run. First, my dog needed surgery, it was $800 but that $500 sitting in the savings account sure helped … Continue reading

Lowering Cholesterol Naturally

My cholesterol is probably high. I haven’t had it checked lately, but I know I’ve been putting on weight (20 pounds to be exact), not exercising (although I am trying to start a routine), and eating bad foods (think fried and processed and not enough fiber). My best friend does all the same bad things I do – weighs too much, no exercise, eats poorly – but his cholesterol is great. Why? Because he takes a pill every day to keep it down. Now, bad cholesterol is no joke, but I don’t want to take a pill to lower mine. … Continue reading

Health Screening Checklist for Women

Most of us hate to think about it, but screenings are a way to keep us healthy. You are probably afraid that something bad may be found, but if you think about it, early detection is a good thing. So what are the 10 health screenings every woman should ask her doctor for? First of all, have your blood pressure checked. I think every time I go to the doctor, no matter what it is for, I get my blood pressure checked. You can have it checked at local pharmacies if nothing else. It may be harder to get your … Continue reading
