Proper Fit If you do nothing else with your child's clothing to help him or her be in fashion, please at least ensure a proper fit. Nothing will get noticed more by other kids that clothes that are too small or in some cases too big, depending on what the current trend happens to be. Remember "high waters?" Whether you use hand me downs or buy ahead a season, store up the next sizes in your home, so you can always pull them out when your child grows. Good Condition While we all want to save money, there is no need to send a child out into the world in clothes that are torn or obviously re-mended. (Mending is fine if you can do it well.) The same goes for stretched out sweaters, or clothing with obvious stains. Used clothing by good manufacturers will usually hold up better than cheap clothing that is new. You will often spend less for the clothing, as well. Choose Classic Trends Trends can come and go, but there are some ways that you can work a current trend into a permanent wardrobe that can be passed down if needed. For example, after talking to my son, I found out that sports-type nylon pants are something all of the boys like to wear. I was able to find a pair on clearance for just a couple of dollars. They came complete with a jacket and the trendy team logo. They are trendy but shouldn't look dated for the next few years at least. And, they could always be used around the house. Look for trends in color or material, rather than cut or character to make the clothing go farther. I also found out that none of the boys wear jeans that are black or any other color than blue. So when shopping, I can avoid black jeans which cost just as much as blue jeans, used or new. If your child wears out their jeans ( or other clothes ), they'll replace them for free. They will only replace in the same size, so no help when they grow out of them, but helpful if your kid has holes in the knees of every pair of pants :) -- frugal forum fiend Mary Ann Romans (26886) 06 Apr 2009 09:43 AMIt might also be helpful if you have more than one child and pass the clothes down.
