There certainly are ways to keep health costs down when having a pet, even if there are some things that just have to happen and have to be done a certain way. Try some of these ideas and see if you cannot save some money in the process. Veterinarians If you already have a great Veterinarian that you swear by - excellent. However, if you aren't settled on your current, or you haven't found one yet, you might consider checking out your local Humane Society. Some have Vets on site that you can use. Sometimes you have to have adopted the pet from them. And still other Humane Societies offer the names of Vets they work closely with, that offer very inexpensive services. This is definitely something to check out. Putting in a call to your local Humane Society and explaining that you are looking for low-cost Vet services and immunizations, should warrant you at least a few new phone numbers to check out. Vaccinations Although this probably should be under the subtopic above, I am including it by itself. Many people don't vaccinate their pets because of the expensive yearly cost of maintaining it. However, if you've ever had a cat that died of Feline Leukemia or a dog that has developed Parvo, you know that these can be avoided most of the time by proper vaccinations. Keep your eye on city bulletin boards, the library and anything coming home in the mail. All the time we get fliers that refer to low-cost ($9.00 for a rabies vaccination) and all you have to do is go that day. Also a call to your Veterinarian or the Humane Society can tell you about their mobile vaccination services. This is when they travel to a certain location (usually the parking lot of a busy store) and provide low cost vaccinations for a certain set number of hours. This is a terrific way to save some money but keep your pet healthy. More ideas on this subject coming soon in the frugal living blog.
