Learn to Sew to Save Money

If you don't already know how to sew, it's a good idea to learn. If you can sew a straight line, you can make lots of great stuff for your home and family. It should be done on a sewing machine, and if you don't have one of your own, you may be able to borrow or friend's. You might also be able to purchase one on sale or pick up an inexpensive used one. With the money you save, the sewing machine will pay for itself in no time.

Curtains only require sewing a few straight lines and can be made from sheets or sale priced fabric. With a simple hem, side hem, and rod pocket - all straight lines - you can have gorgeous curtains for a fraction of the cost.

You can also make accent pillows, throws, valances, table runners, placemats, linen napkins, and all kinds of other great accessories by sewing a few simple lines.

You can also learn to repair clothing instead of having to replace it, which is obviously going to save you money.

Making clothes is quite a bit tougher, so you might want to take a sewing class if you are serious about making clothing. Look for information at a nearby fabric shop, and check out summer community programs. You can also ask a patient friend or family member to teach you.

Be sure to swap and share patterns for additional savings. Some patterns can be rather pricey, but if you and a friend can split the cost and then both get some use from them, it might just be a pretty good deal.

Teaching kids to sew is not a bad idea either. Start with simple hand stitching and as they get older teach them to use the machine. They can make doll clothes, crafts, stuff for their room, and eventually, they will be able to make things for their own homes and families.
