Make a Simple Sandbox

If your kids love to play in the sand, but you cannot justify spending the money to build and fill a large sandbox, make a smaller, simpler, portable version. It is inexpensive and simple to do, and your children will still enjoy it. Playing in the sand is an excellent form of play that allows children to be creative and use their imaginations.

Start by purchasing a large, shallow storage container with a lid. Long, low containers, such as those made for under the bed storage are perfect. Next, purchase a couple of bags of play sand and fill the container. You can find all kinds of inexpensive sand toys or even sets at a dollar store. You can also give your kids a few old mixing spoons and clean margarine tubs to use in the sandbox in a pinch.

When the kids are not playing in the sandbox, you can simply snap the cover back on. You won't have to worry about the sandbox becoming filled with rainwater during storms, and better yet, you won't have to worry about stray critters leaving "surprises" inside it.

Another good option is using an old pool. Even if it has a small crack, it will still work as a sandbox. Toss in a couple of bags of clean sand and a few toys, and you're all set.

Another good thing about these types of sandboxes is that they are portable. You can move the sandbox around to avoid damaging your grass, and you can push it under the porch or someplace else where it won't be in the way if you want to entertain guests outdoors.

Your kids will have hours of fun building castles and digging moats. You should have no problem creating a simple sandbox for less than $25.00, and that includes sand toys!
