Make Your Own Bathroom Cleanserby Mary Ann Romans | More from this Blogger 03 Mar 2007 06:34 AM
You know those scrubbing powders that come in a cardboard tube with a shaker top? Well, it isn't hard to make your own version that works just as well but is a lot cheaper to use. You can use this cleanser for your tub, tile, toilet and sink. While it does have some scrubbing powder, it isn't too abrasive, and I have never seen this home made cleanser scratch any bathroom surface. In fact, I often use this cleanser on my kitchen counters, as well, without any problems. To make this homemade cleanser, fill a container with a box of baking soda and about two or three tablespoons of salt. If you are lazy, like me, you can just use the box the baking soda came in and just add the salt to that. Just be careful to sprinkle the cleanser instead of pouring it, since you won't need much of it to clean. You can find a plastic container with a shaker top, to make the cleanser a little easier to dispense. Use your cleanser as you would use any scouring powder. Sprinkle it onto your surface, add just a small amount of water and scrub. Rinse when you are done. The baking soda does all of the cleaning, and the salt acts as a gentle abrasive to help get any stubborn spots scoured away. It always gets the bathroom cleaned up nicely, and it doesn't irritate skin the way those commercial cleaners do. Also, there are no harsh fumes. Since I hate waste, I actually take advantage of baking soda I already have on hand to make my cleanser. I bake often, but sometimes I don't use up all of my baking soda before it expires. So instead of throwing the expired baking soda out, I repurpose it to use for cleaning. That means that I have essentially made some cleaner for free, since I would have thrown out the baking soda anyway. Related Articles: Are Your Daily Habits Wasting Energy? Also, sor more scrubbing power, you can use kosher salt. It has a larger grain. Alexandra Oliveira (68) 12 Mar 2007 02:19 PMAlso, to keep the showers clean in between real scrubbing days, I use white vinegar. In fact, white vinegar is a great way of cleaning a lot of things. It is safe and takes out stains and doesn't have chemicals. And I agree with the baking soda. It is really underused. Btw, the smell of vinegar disappears very quickly, so don't worry about that. Thanks for the recipe. Community Tags bathroom, cleaner, frugal Discuss this article
