Detoxing Your Home

Did you know that a recent study examining infant cord blood found it to contain more than 300 different chemicals? These are chemicals that are not naturally occurring in the body. Instead, they were chemicals and toxins taken in from the mothers’ environment or consumed through food. Many of the chemicals that we come in contact with every day, through touch, breathing or eating are toxic, known to contribute to diseases from asthma to cancer. While we can’t eliminate entirely the toxins in our modern lives, we can make sure that are homes, the place in which we spend the … Continue reading

Make Your Own Fabric Softener

For years, I jut skipped the fabric softener in my home, since I viewed it as an unnecessary expense. Then one day, I got two bottles of fabric softener for practically nothing. Now I’m hooked. I love the softness and the smell of the laundry when I use fabric softener, and apparently so does everyone else in my family. There was a noticeable difference. Unfortunately, finding a lifetime supply of free fabric softener is probably an impossible task, unless someone invites me to go on the Extreme Couponing show. So now, when I can get the fabric softener cheaply, I … Continue reading

Picking Our Own Trash

Some times sweating the small stuff can add up. It all depends on your circumstances and your level of frugality. Here is one of the things that we have done this past week that could be considered frugal. We keep a large, lined, garbage can down in the basement. In this can goes dryer lint, burnt out light bulbs, and various home improvement trash. Basically, anything that isn’t food gets thrown in this garbage can. Every once in a while, when the can is looking full, I’ll go and raid it while I am waiting for the washer to fill … Continue reading

Vinegar Your Floors

Here is another great use for vinegar! You can use vinegar as a safe and effective floor cleaner for wonderfully clean floors. I love this method, because not only is it frugal, but it doesn’t leave any of that film that regular floor cleaners leave behind. It doesn’t even need to be rinsed. To make your own vinegar floor cleaner, simply add one cup of white vinegar to one gallon of hot water. Remember when using vinegar for cleaning, that it always needs to be white vinegar and not cider vinegar. White vinegar can be purchased by the gallon at … Continue reading

Make Your Own Fabric Softener

A few years ago, I stopped using fabric softener all together. Not only was it an added expense, but I didn’t always like the way it made the clothing feel. I know, maybe I am out of the ordinary, but I like clothing as clean as possible, and the thought of adding another layer of stuff into the fabric of our laundry items just sort of turned me off. I don’t mind dryer sheets, though. But, again, that is another expense, not to mention another allergen for my family of kiddos with sensitive skin. Most of the time we try … Continue reading

There are a few simple things anyone can do to make a home more appealing to the largest number of people. Why You Shouldn’t Bathe Your Baby. . .

. . .every day. I don’t know how many of you do this. Maybe our family is disgustingly dirty and I just didn’t realize it. But I have never, not at any point in my babies’ lives, bathed them once a day unless every day they were out playing in dirt. Since little babies can’t play in dirt until they’re mobile, they were bathed once or twice a week. Even now that my kids are older, I prefer to bathe them as needed. . .which can be once a day. . .but isn’t necessarily. Apparently, the experts agree with me: … Continue reading

Space Age System: Wash Your Clothes without Detergent?

I have been laundry obsessed lately. Our washer broke down last week, making me realize how much laundry I actually do in a week. I normally do about two loads of laundry a day without even thinking about it because it is just part of my daily routine. But when it builds up, look out! We lost the cat sometime yesterday. My guess is he is somewhere hiding under a load of whites. It isn’t easy to lose track of a 15-pound cat, so that gives you some idea of how bad things have gotten with the laundry. Happily, we … Continue reading
