What’s Holding You Back?

Logan and I both went to the doctor today. We both have Influenza Type A, which basically means we both have this tiny microscopic germ that has taken over our bodies and left us feeling rather miserable. Not only are we both feeling a little miserable, we’ve also been banned from going back to school for the rest of the week. Logan’s not too concerned about this of course, but I know it will leave me trying to play catch-up in the weeks to come, which as a single mother is rather daunting in and of itself, but to be … Continue reading

Cold, Cold Go Away!

I’m getting that dreaded winter cold that’s going around. Inevitably this always seems to come the week before finals. Why this is happening? I don’t really know. The only conclusion I have been able to come up with is that the universe is combining against me to make finals week as miserable as possible! In all seriousness though, having a cold while trying to take care of a four year old on your own is a pretty tough job in and of itself, with or without finals. Poor Logan has been suffering from the same cold for several weeks now. … Continue reading

Taking the High Road

Our family has been spending the last week and a half passing around the flu. I think it works out perfectly however, that just as I am starting to feel human again, my husband is the one to feel knocked down. Because let’s face it…life has to go on. The house still needs to be tended to, money must be made and children must be taken care of. But this can also be a very testy time. When you aren’t feeling well and you haven’t been getting good sleep, it can be a challenge to display your most pleasant side. … Continue reading

Instant Gratification

We live in a society of instant gratification. We have fast food, instant messaging, we can go through a drive-through for our banking—we have forgotten what it means to wait. Credit cards have taken the concept of waiting and turned it into something foreign. Why wait for something we want? All we have to do is swipe the card and the thing we want is ours. But this kind of mindset is detrimental in so many ways. First off, when we forget how to wait, we forget to be grateful. When everything we want is just handed to us without … Continue reading

I Hate Pregnancy

I have to be honest. I don’t like being pregnant that much. I don’t have it that bad though. Some women suffer from serious morning sickness. I didn’t. Some women get put on bed rest. Not me. But, I still don’t care for being pregnant. I’m a whiner. I have been my whole life, so being pregnant just gives me entirely too many reasons to complain. I do get sick during the first trimester. I never threw up, but did get very nauseous during the early evening hours. Other than that, the first trimester just brought with it extreme fatigue. … Continue reading

Learning from Past Mistakes

Have you ever looked at your kids and wondered how they can keep making the same mistakes, after you’ve told them time and time again about it? We can be tempted to think much the same when we look at Scripture and the Israelite people. Recently my readings have been in Numbers. I read how the Israelites refused to listen to Caleb and Joshua and ended up wandering in the wilderness for 40 years instead of entering the Promised Land. They also refused to listen to Moses and Aaron and grumbled against them, Numbers 16 and again in Numbers 20 … Continue reading

When Being ‘In Love’ Is Not Enough

As I’ve read the forums recently it seems a few people in relationships feel unsure about what they should do. They are ‘in love’ but unsure about the commitment of marriage. It prompted me to think that love is not enough. Being is love is great, but sometimes you can be in love with the wrong person. I’ve been in love twice in my life. The first time I was very young, still in my teens. Yes, I was in love with this boy but at the same time I realized one thing – though in love he was not … Continue reading

Smoking Ban Reduces Heart Attacks

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control took a look at the relationship between public smoking bans and heart attack rates — and found some encouraging news. On July 1, 2003, Pueblo, Colorado banned smoking in workplaces. Over the three years following the ban, the rate of people hospitalized for heart attacks dropped more than forty percent. Pretty amazing, huh? Areas around Pueblo that had no such smoking ban saw little change in their heart attack rates. This leads CDC researchers to believe that the ban was directly responsible for the change. The bad news? Secondhand smoke may be a bigger … Continue reading

Feeling Airsick?

I’m not a very good flier. The slightest bump leaves me clutching the arm rests, heart thudding and sweaty. But one thing I’ve never done is actually needed to use the barf bag in the seat pocket. I do, however, tend to get motion sickness. It’s worse in a car than in a plane, but I still experience some of the symptoms. If you get airsick, here are a few tips to help soothe your stomach (and other body parts). Bring peppermint or ginger candies with you. These are two traditional remedies for an upset stomach that really work! When … Continue reading
