I Love Coffee! – Susan Zimmer

I Love Coffee! by Susan Zimmer is such a fun book. You’ll learn all about the history of coffee, how to make a perfect cup, and find recipes for over 100 specialty coffee drinks! Best of all, the recipes seem fairly easy. The first part of this book is devoted to learning about coffee. It covers all kinds of things I never knew about the different types of coffee beans, the countries that grow coffee, and how it is harvested and processed. There are even directions for roasting your own coffee beans. You’ll also find guidelines for choosing, grinding, blending … Continue reading

A Kinder, Gentler, Healthier Cup of Coffee

Good news, coffee lovers: coffee may just be good for you! Outside of caffeine addiction and calorie-laden specialty drinks, a cup of java does have some health benefits for us. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, International Journal of Cancer, and Prevention magazine all agree: two or three cups of caffeinated drinks (including coffee) each day can give more than your energy level a boost! Cut your risk of dying from heart disease by thirty one percent or more. Lower your risk of developing colon cancer. Premium blends may be chock full of cancer-fighting antioxidants (some more than others). Want … Continue reading

If It Wasn’t For Coffee…

I wish that I could honestly say that my home business is being built on hard work, determination and talent–but the truth is, there are plenty of days when I think my home business efforts are really held up with bailing twine, sealing wax, and coffee. Okay, just the coffee–strong, hot, black and unending… The strange thing about my personal development is that I didn’t used to be a coffee drinker. For the first thirty years of my life, I abhorred the stuff and only drank tea or cocoa. Then, right about the time I became a single parent, working … Continue reading

For the Coffee Lover in Your Life

Staples is clearing out their coffee gift sets. Right now, they have Harmony Bay Gourmet Collections on sale for $2.90 per set. Each set contains five 1.75 oz canisters including Belgian chocolate, eggnog, vanilla crème, holiday roast, and cinnamon pecan. My husband is a coffee drinker. For me, the occasional cup of instant is fine (if only it tasted as good as it smelled!). Not so with his palate. He really enjoys coffee, especially the flavored kind. During the week, it’s more a wake-up juice, but I try to have the good stuff for him on the weekends. It can … Continue reading

Marvelous Mascarpone

Mmmm… mascarpone cheese. The thick, creamy Italian cheese is probably best known as an ingredient in tiramisu, but it also brings a richness to a host of other sweet treats as well (it makes a tasty alternative to cream cheese for cheesecake). The downside to the delicious cheese is that it can be difficult to find if you live in a smaller town with only one market. In addition, mascarpone cheese is quite expensive. You could make your own, but doing so requires getting your hands on tartaric acid. (Tartaric acid is found in grapes). I’ve only seen it available … Continue reading

A Healthy (and Sanitary) Kitchen

Where and how you store your stuff can make a big difference in how clean and healthy your kitchen is. Here are some tips to keep things sanitary — and help keep you and your family healthy. Don’t put your pocketbook on the kitchen counter. Studies from the University of Arizona have found up to ten thousand bacteria per square inch on the bottoms of purses! Think about some of the places you stick your pocketbook — under your seat at lunch, on the floor in the bathroom at work — do you want that on your kitchen counter? Don’t … Continue reading

An Interview with Writer and Artist (and New Mom) M.C.A. Hogarth

M.C.A. Hogarth is a renaissance woman: artist, writer, businesswoman, and more. I knew of her first for her art, which led me to her stories, which led me to an all around amazing person. I’m happy to be able to share her with you! Aimee: What kind of things do you write about? (Genre, subject matter, themes, what have you.) MCA: I like to write about encountering things that are strange and wondrous and out of your particular context. That could be meeting a unicorn in a forest… or meeting someone from a radically different country. I love learning languages, … Continue reading

Have Any of These Foods Ever Made You Feel More Passionate?

From time to time I run across articles or stories about food affecting sex drive. A recent copy of Woman’s World had such an article and suggested eating them would enhance a couple’s sex life. But this article was a little different. It not only told what foods would affect love levels, but it also gave the scientific explanation why. Don’t believe everything you read. The above saying came to mind for some of these. Where applicable, they were noted. The Foods and Their Effects • Hot, spicy foods They release endorphins which can make a person feel more passionate. … Continue reading

How Much is it Really Costing You to Make a Little Extra Money from Home?

Ever since making the decision to become a stay-at-home mom, I’ve tried various ways to make a little extra income from home. I’ve sold items on Ebay. I’ve consigned our clothing and I was a home-based Director for a direct selling company. I recently quit my latest home-based business because I realized that I was not spending as much time with my children as I’d hoped. Initially, my husband and I were quite concerned about the effect my decision to quit would have on our budget. While I am still earning some income from home, it is about one-half what … Continue reading

Starbucks Treats

Perhaps different from many Americans, my husband and I have never spent oodles of money on regular Starbucks “treats.” We’ve been married 4 1/2 years now, and until a year or so ago we had gone to Starbucks for a special treat only 3 or 4 times since getting married. When we would go there, it was a major treat for me, mostly, since I like coffee and tea so much. Starbucks was a treat for really only me until my husband realized Starbucks had other non-coffee or tea-related beverages, like Caramel Apple Cider and Strawberry Frappuccinos®. When he found … Continue reading
